Alund/ Pella rout Gonzalez/ Junqueira in quarterfinal – Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011
Argentinean couple of Martin Alund with Guido Pella got the better of compatriots Maximo Gonzalez with Diego Junqueira in the doubles quarterfinal of the Ciudad de Guayaquil Challenger 2011.
On Wednesday the 23rd of November 2011, at the classic clay courts of the Guayaquil Tennis Club in Guayaquil, Ecuador, the two teams duelled swords against each other and after one hour and forty one minutes Alund/ Pella bounced back from a set down to score 4-6, 7-6(2), 10-7.
Gonzalez/ Junqueira dominated the first set of the match and they targeted seventy six percent of their first serves. Opening the first round of the match was Gonzalez/ Junqueira and both the squads were able to hold their respective serves to place themselves on the scoreboard at 1-1. In the following two games the players once more bagged a service game each and the score had tied at two games each at the end of the fourth game.
As the crews matched a blow or a blow they traded in breaks in the fifth and the sixth game to level the score at three games each. Neither of the players wanted the other player to take the lead on the scoreboard and they kept matching an eye for an eye and the last time the score tied was at four games each at the end of the eighth game.
However, it was in the ninth game that Gonzalez/ Junqueira held their serves and then capitalized on a crucial break in the tenth game to reel away with the opening round.
During the second set the teams once more initiated the cat and mouse chase and this time the competition took a notch higher as they matched an eye for an eye from the very beginning. The crews kept the score tied as the set progressed on even terms at two games each, three games each, then at four games each, and finally at five games each at the end of the tenth game.
Eventually the set was shoved into a tiebreaker as the two squads broke each other one after the other by the end of the twelfth game. The neck-on-neck run lost its zest in the tiebreaker and first to take the lead was Alund/ Pella. However, Gonzalez/ Junqueira made a comeback and tied the score for the last time at two points each. From there onwards, Alund/ Pella made a dash for the finish line and clogged the tiebreaker at 7-2.
By the end of the second set the match advanced into a super tiebreaker as each team had bagged a set apiece. Although the goose chase had once again initiated, Alund/ Pella cut the cat and mouse chase with a series of breaks and holds to bag the super tiebreaker at 10-7 and sealed their victory of the match to reserve a spot in the semi final.
