The Spanish full-back is an important player to the Spanish club, and he has proven it by signing a new contract for Los Blancos.
Last season Jose Mourinho lost one of his main defenders, http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Sergio-Ramos-c33096 playing in his position.
Ramos left the right-back slot vacant, and Jose Mourinho decided to play http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Álvaro-Arbeloa-c5282 in that position.
The Spanish full-back rarely got a chance to impress in the Real Madrid first-team, but with Ramos playing as a centre-back alongside Pepe, Arbeloa had the chance to express himself on the pitch.
The Spaniard was able to give out a number of first-team appearances for the Spanish giants, and eventually helped them win the Spanish La Liga.
The Spaniard was then called up to represent the Spanish national team in the Euro 2012. The Spaniards used to play Sergio Ramos in the right-back position, but since http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Carles-Puyol-c8331 was ruled out of the competition because of a knee injury, Ramos had to play
in the centre-back position and it was Alvaro Arbeloa who once again took the right-back position.
Even though Arbeloa received a lot of criticism while making a run into the final third, there is no doubt that his performances in the defensive role were brilliant.
He was able to contain the man on his flank and that is the reason why he showed the world that full-backs who cannot attack can still be a part of modern football.
Since next season Mourinho will adjust with Ramos and http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Pepe-c29670 in the centre-back position, Arbeloa is a needed asset for the Spanish giants and that is the reason why he was recently given a contract extension.
While many thought that Madrid will look for a right-back during this summer transfer window, Arbeloa’s extension simply explains that Mourinho is not looking forward to let go of his valuable asset.
While speaking about his contract extension with Real Madrid, Arbeloa said:
"I am delighted that the club still has faith in me and I hope to be able to continue enjoying my playing career.”
"Today's players have longer careers and I hope it's not my last contract extension with Real Madrid.”
Alvaro Arbeloa joined Real Madrid in 2009 and his new contract binds him to the club until 2016.
