Alvaro Malpartida and Nicolas Guajardo enjoy success on day 2 at Arica World Star Tour
Peru’s Alvaro Malpartida and Chile’s Nicolas Guajardo qualified for the third round (Round of 32) at the Association of Surfing Professionals (ASP) 3-Star Arica World Star Tour presented by Maui and Sons after prevailing in their respective Round 2 (Round
of 64) heats that went down at the reef break of El Gringo in Arica, Chile, on Thursday, June 14.
Mexico’s Angelo Lozano finished just behind Malpartida in the 13th place to accompany the latter into the third round of the competition. Brazil’s Yan Guimarares and his fellow countryperson Wellington Carane rounded out the bottom-two positions
to find themselves receiving an exit ticket.
The 14th heat further sent Cristian Merello into the next round following his runner-up finish. Peru’s Miguel Tudela and Puerto Rico’s Juan Carlos Martinez finished in third and fourth place respectively, consequently getting eliminated from the
latest ASP 3-Star event.
The intimidating surfing conditions prevailing at the primary event site promised to deliver intense action throughout the day. The competition field comprising of local and international surfers found themselves with a demanding task of holding their own
in wild four-to-six barrels, the same challenge that had resulted a number of injuries during the first day of the competition.
Malpartida did exceptionally well to adjust to the challenging conditions at hand and put on a performance that was not only impressive, but also served to earn him top honours. The Peruvian surfer collected a 5.75 off his business-wave and immediately backed
it up with a 6.55-point ride for a two-wave total of 12.30 points.
Lozano accompanied the Peruvian into the next round after making a runner-up finish through a heat-total of 10.25 points, which included a 3.75 and 6.50-point ride.
Guimarares and Carane finished with a heat-total of 9.50 and 4.10 points respectively, which led to their removal from the competition field.
The 14th heat featured one of the best performances of the day as Guajardo put on a superb show for the local fans. The Chilean surfer caught a juicy wave in the opening minutes of the heat to earn an 8.75 off it and went on to back it up with
an even more spectacular 8.85-point ride. The resultant heat-total of 17.60 points served to earn him a convincing victory.
The Chilean surfers continued to enjoy success on day 2 of the competition, with Merello advancing through into the third round as well following his runner-up finish, courtesy of his combined wave-score of 13.10 points.
Tudela and Martinez were unable to make the Round 3 cut after registering a dismissal heat-total of 9.85 and 1.95 points respectively.
