Alvaro Quiros and Rafael Cabrera-Bello confirm their participation in Volvo World Match Play Championship
The 24-man field for the star-studded Volvo Match Play Championship has been finalised and some of the top-ranked players in the world have confirmed their participation in the event.
Blistering Spanish players of the likes of Alvaro Quiros, and Rafael Cabrera-Bello will also be part of the field and will be attempting to carry on with their rampage which they started earlier in the year.
Quiros, winner of seven professional titles in his stellar career, is hoping to regain his excellent form which he had last year and which helped him land two European Tour titles on the Middle Eastern turf.
He won the Dubai Desert Classic earlier last year and closed the season with another victory at Dubai World Championship.
He failed to make the halfway cut at the Masters this year and is losing his chances of making it into the Ryder Cup team in October.
He needs a victory before he loses all hopes of reserving a place in the coveted event.
Quiros said, “I am so pleased to have finally qualified for this year’s Volvo World Match Play Championship. To play in Spain in front of my home crowds against such an elite field is very exciting and I hope, with their support, I can go a lot further than
I did last year”.
Per Ericsson, President of Volvo Event Management, who has played an elementary role in supporting consecutive events on the European Tour, hailed the Match Play Championship as the essence of the sport.
He said, “It will be thrilling to see who will claim the final places in the field over the next couple of weeks and, of course, especially to see who will win at this week’s Volvo China Open”.
The field comprises of Darren Clarke the 2011 Open Champion, 2010 US PGA Champion Martin Kaymer, two-time US Open Champion, Retief Goosen and 1999 Open Champion, Paul Lawrie and several other high profile players who will tee off for the knock out format.
Most of the European Tour players who are trailing on the Official World Golf Rankings (OWGR) are hoping to post a strong finish in order to qualify for the subsequent major events and the Ryder Cup in Chicago.
