Alvaro Quiros hoping to bag the Maybank Malaysian Open title after a disastrous finish at Masters
Six-time European Tour winner, Alvaro Quiros will be hoping to turn the tides at this week’s Maybank Malaysian Open, after a disastrous attempt for the green jacket last week.
Quiros will be part of the Spanish contingent in the event and will be hoping to clinch the title on the windy Asian turf.
He will be accompanied by Simon Dyson and the duo will be hoping to land the title in order to improve their chances of a possible inclusion in the Ryder Cup team.
Dyson has also missed the cut at the Masters, seriously jeopardizing his chances for a Ryder Cup pick in October.
Quiros, who landed two European Tour titles last year, both of them coming on the Middle Eastern turf, is hoping to utilise the tropical and windy conditions in Malaysia.
He said, “My game is not at its best right now. Hopefully after a bad week at the Masters, this one will be better and I’ll be fighting for the title. My length is one of my most important advantages. The golf course set-up is such that you have to see
how your mood is or if you are at the best of your game. I’ll have to use the driver for sure. The golf course is not that short”.
While world number seven Martin Kaymer will also be part of the field at the star-studded event, Quiros is already worried of the tough playing conditions at the Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club.
He added, “I think it is the tightest golf course I’ve ever seen in my life. The fairways are really small and tight”.
Also on the field, will be the South African duo Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, who will pose a major threat to the rest of the aspiring players in the field.
Oosthuizen, in particular, is coming out of a strong runner up finish at Augusta National where he pulled in a historic double eagle at the difficult layout.
Quiros lamented his performance in the Masters last week and called it a bad start. He regarded his poor putting as the main reason behind his fall and particularly regretted the opening round where he fell for a six-over, 78.
He was never able to recover from the early loss and carded another disappointing five-over, 76 to miss the cut.
