Alvaro Quiros moves up, as he defeats Tetsuji Hiratsuka at the Volvo World Match Play Championship in the second round
After losing in the first round, Alvaro Quiros saved himself from the elimination, as he recorded a win against Tetsuji Hiratsuka on Friday, at the Volvo World Match Play Championship.
The 29-year-old Spanish golfer was excited to perform at his home course. However, he was unable to impress the spectators in the first round and was defeated by Sergio Garcia.
He boosted his performance in the second round and displayed amazing strokes at the Finca Cortesin, Casares in Andalucía, Spain.
Quiros started the game averagely. He secured an early lead till the fifth hole. He earned points lead on the 2nd hole and carded birdies on the 3rd and 5th hole.
Then he moved to secure his domination of the leaderboard and made birdies on the 8th, 9th and 11th. The game was really competitive at that stage, however, Quiros impressed the spectators.
He finished the round by making two more consecutive birdies on the 13th and 14th hole. Such impressive and consistent scores took him to the top and the Hiratsuka felt the danger.
Hiratsuka shot only three birdies and earned a benefit point on the 7th hole, where Quiros carded a bogey. That was the only bogey from the Spaniard and he remained at par on the rest holes.
“It's a win, obviously it's a completely different story to yesterday and my putting was way, way better,” said Quiros. “Playing this way, I felt a little bit more confident”.
“It's not difficult to believe it but I've been struggling with the putting for five or six months, even in the victory in Dubai, I was shaking, but my long game was that good that I was able to win. If I hole two or three good putts, I will probably get
a victory”.
In the first round, Garcia defeated him. Quiros was worried on Thursday that if he lost again, he would be eliminated from the event. However, he delivered his best and is now moving into the third round.
After losing twice, Hiratsuka is not eligible to move further and faced elimination. He was eliminated from the European Tour staged event and si npw heading back to home in Japan.
