Alvaro Quiros says he is 100 per cent committed to defend the DP World Tour Championship title
Alvaro Quiros of Spain visited the Jumeirah Golf Estates, in a bid to host a special golf clinic organised by the DP World – the title sponsor for European Tour’s season-ending DP World Tour Championship in Dubai.
The official tournament will begin on November 22, 2012, featuring the top-60 players in the Race to Dubai.
Last year, Quiros won the $8 million tournament and recorded the sixth European Tour victory of his career.
This year, he is standing at the 73rd position in the money list, currently. Therefore, he is not certain about successfully defending his title at the Earth course..
Right from the beginning of the 2012 European Tour season, the Spaniard was struggling with his form, due to some swing changes that he made earlier this year.
With five tournaments left prior to the start of the event in Dubai, the 29-year-old still has a chance to make it to the top-60 by recording some good finishes.
He said, “I made some changes to my swing because ... I was looking for more consistency and more top ten finishes to take me to the next level”.
He added, “Unfortunately, it has taken me a long time to bring everything together and the longer it went on the less confidence I had. But it’s slowly coming back”.
Talking to the European Tour’s official website, he stated that he was 100 per cent committed to defending his crown this year.
Despite his poor form in the recent tournaments, he is expected to reach the top-60 mark, thanks to his ability of playing under pressure.
He is regarded as the most successful player in the three-year history of the tournament. In his debut appearance in 2009, he tied for the 42nd position and followed that with a third-place finish in 2010.
Last year, he came out of the field victorious and is confident to maintain his good form in the tournament this season too.
“I’m 100% committed to being back here next month,” he said. “I didn’t know until today that I am the most successful player in the event’s history, which is very special and gives me an extra incentive. I know I have something to fight for”.
Other than that, he also holds a strong track record in United Arab Emirates, as the Spanish star’s three of the six European Tour victories came on the same soil.
His victories in UAE include the 2009 Commercialbank Qatar Masters, the Omega Dubai Desert Classic and the DP World Tour Championship in 2011.
Therefore, he will be a man to watch at this year’s DP World Tour Championship, if he succeeds in recording a top-60 finish in the rankings before the tournament begins next month.
