Alviro Petersen leads Glamorgan from the front with an unbeaten ton against Surrey
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/England-c56013. The visitors ended day-one on 352 for the loss of four wickets
on Tuesday, May 24th, 2011 with their captain unbeaten on 178.
Petersen elected to bat first after winning the toss. The pitch looked very good for batting, as there was no grass or moisture in it. The bounce was even for the batsmen, which made life difficult for the bowling side.
The visitors’ opener, http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Gareth-Rees-c1461, attacked the bowlers and reached 25 runs in a quick time with the help of six fours. He failed to carry onto the start to his innings though and was sent back to the pavilion after that.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/William-Bragg-c2795, who bats at number three for his team, was also unable to make most of the good start he got to his innings. He scored 28 runs in his innings and was involved in a 76-run partnership with his captain.
The visitors were two down for 104 runs when http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Michael-James-Powell-c75991 joined Petersen at the crease. The pair took the game away from the opposition, batting sensibly. They put together 225 runs for the third wicket, hurting the hosts badly.
Powell was dismissed after scoring 99 runs with the help of 11 fours and one six. He played really well and deserved a century, but was unfortunate to miss out.
Petersen didn’t lose his focus though, as he completed a marvellous ton for his team, leading from the front. The right-handed Proteas opener was under a lot of pressure to perform, as he struggled in the earlier County Championship games. He felt bad and
stated that was feeling lonely after not being able to make an impression for his team.
The South African was also criticised for his lack of runs in the County Championship matches, but responded in the best possible way with a century against Surrey. He remained unbeaten on 178 with the help of 21 fours and one six. The star player will be
eying to make a big one for his team and make sure to bat just once in the match.
Petersen will be looking for some support in the middle-order. http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Owen-c80374, who was sent as a night watchman, was unbeaten on four before close of play.
Jade Dernbach was the pick of the bowlers for his team, as he dismissed two batsmen in the Glamorgan innings.
