South African opener Alviro Petersen’s participation in the remainder of the ongoing Test match against England at Headingley has been cast into doubt after the 31-year-old suffered a right hamstring injury on the second day of the match.
Petersen underwent scans in the afternoon of the second day, and the results are due by Saturday. The right-hander is suspected of having suffered a grade one tear, from which he would require up to ten days to recover.
The hamstring tear marks his second fitness complaint during the tour, the first having occurred when he injured the joints in his left foot during a jog, rendering him incapable of playing the tour match against Somerset, although he managed to recover
in time for the warm-up game against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Kent-c802.
Petersen’s injury makes him the fourth South African player to suffer a fitness complaint during the ongoing tour of England. Marchant de Lange is out for six weeks owing to lower back spasms, while all-rounder Albie Morkel, who was drafted into the squad
to serve as a replacement for de Lange, is also out with an ankle injury.
Arguably the most serious, however, was Mark Boucher’s eye injury, sustained during a warm-up match against http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Somerset-c843 in Taunton, which brought the veteran wicketkeeper’s career to an abrupt end.
http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Russell-c87177 Domingo, South Africa’s assistant coach, has stated that while Petersen’s injury did not appear to be “too serious”, its exact nature was as yet “unconfirmed”.

Petersen did not ask for immediate treatment, only requesting the physiotherapist after having surpassed 156. A variety of stretches and pills allowed him to remain at the crease till lunch. However, the strain began to show during the next session, and
he was only able to bat five more overs after lunch before edging http://www.senore.com/Cricket/SCJ-Broad-c2465 to wicketkeeper Matthew Prior.
Although he managed to http://www.senore.com/Cricket/Adrian-Roger-Kirshaw-Pierson-c42135 it out at the crease for a valiant innings despite his obvious discomfort, the Proteas batsman did not return to field during England’s first innings, after his side had posted a total of 419.
