Question:

Am I Too Old? Jazz/Tap?

When I was in high school, I was involved with a few musicals, and absolutely LOVED them, but was held back from any large roles because I have no dance training.

Now that I am in University and have more free time, I would love to get back into musical theatre. Am I too old (21) to start learning how to dance? I guess the most useful disciplines for my needs would be jazz/tap. Do you think one lesson, for one or two hours, every other week would be enough to learn moderately well? I don't know how much I can afford.

Also, I'm pretty out of shape now, so any suggestions on what I could do to prepare for dancing? Or maybe some websites that show basic technique so I can start learning on my own?

Thanks, I really appreciate all your help!

  1. Go for it! Even if you have to find a youth class, go for it!

I've heard of something called Jazzercize that is supposed to be dancing instead of treadmilling for excercize, but I don't have any personal experience in one of those classes, so I'm not sure how good they are.

Also in my area there are a few opportunities for adults to learn to dance. Not ballet or anything, but basic jazz is pretty straightforward.

    Good luck finding something!

  2. i agree no one is to old to learn dancing!

to get in shape start strengthening your legs and core.  those are important in ballet and jazz

in tap stretch/roll your ankles and work your lower calves (main tap muscle)

  3. No, you are never too old to start dance, blah blah blah.

I am sick and tiered of people asking these questions.

Try searching...you know, in the 'SEARCH FOR QUESTIONS' spot.

Unless you people like to waste 5 gorgous points...

    Have a nice day.

  4. there are adult classes to learn this. there are also theatrical dancing classes if you can find a dance school for it. I know my dance school has those classes. And before you start taking classes you can stretch. a great way to get fit and flexible is to do yoga or pilates on the side of our dance classes. GOOD LUCK!!!

  5. I don't think you are. It just depends on how much you know, what studio you go to, how many classes you want to take a week, and how much money you're willing to spend. Go on Weight Watchers before. It might help.

  6. My dad's assistant started taking tap dancing classes last year, and she's like 40, and my grandfather's retirement center offers them, so no, you are definitely not too old! : )

A lot of schools offer beginners dance classes in tap & jazz, so you might want to see if your Uni does. If they don't, then look into dance schools for adults in your town. I live in LA, and I know that at the Santa Monica Community College they have tap classes for ppl of all ages in their Continuing Education program & they are really inexpensive.

I want to join the Tap That tap dancing troupe at the school I'm hoping I'll get into, and have been practicing my tapping a lot more recently. The last time I took a tap class was when I was 5 and I'm 16 now, so it's like I'm a beginner. Honestly, you get the hang of it fairly quickly, and it's soooo much fun.

    Go for it!

  7. No your not. You could take Musical Theater. It's like, a real kind of dance. But if you want to REALLY get into it and be really good again, I suggest you take ballet too.

  8. Theres no age limit to dancing! If you want to learn to dance, go for it! I'm sure your local community center has some not very expensive adult dance classes. It's a fun way to stay in shape and I really think you should get back into it. Good luck! :)

  9. Your never too old!!!

You will just have to work extra hard. You can learn some basic stuff off of You tube

  10. you tube has a bunch they will help alat also theres an adult dance class at any foot-notes for only 20.00 a month       enjoy

  11. Honestly you are never to old to learn to dance. Dancing is for all ages and is a super fun hobby.

To prepare i would say do lots of stretching.

a 2 hour class every other week could work just

fine but you would have to see what fits with the studio you are planning to dance at.

My classes are an hour every week.

So try it out and i bet you'll enjoy it!

  12. Honestly one lesson for one or two hours ever other week will not do it.  Youll need to get in at least a lesson a week, but two would be better.  then practice on off days

  13. No way!Have fun.
