Question:

Am I a bad person because I don't care about world events?

I'm 20, newly married, pregnant, and in my second year of college. My husband is in the Army and I'm trying to get sponsorship to live with him abroad. My friends are mostly activists, Greenpeace-supporting Darfur-saving Obama-voting Iraq war-protesting twenty-somethings that look down on me because I don't care about any of these things. Not that I think they're bad, I just don't have the time and energy to care about everything going on in the world. I'd rather focus all of my energy on my family, rather than bringing democracy to the people of countries that don't want us there to begin with. Sorry for the novel, now that I sound totally narrow-minded, am I justified or paranoid?

  1. I realize I'll gain favor with you by supporting your viewpoint.  And certainly, one's family must come first.  But if we are all  in this together, surely you can also realize by creating more democracies, we'll also be making this a safer place for our children to grow up in?

Right now, I'm gravely concerned over a lunatic running Iran, who believes Israel should be wiped off the map.  And coincidentally, also is said to have a nuclear weapons programme under way.  If Israel launches a preemptive strike, I fear what will follow.

Would it not be better for the citizens to have a voice in who runs the country?  For once the rockets are launched, it's doubtful there'll be many citizens left.

  2. It only takes a few mins. to check the news on the internet. You can download different headlines on My Yahoo's homepage and skim over them real quickly on your way to Yahoo Answers and be able to carry on conversations with your friends! ~ : )

  3. You are totally justified.  Any moron can sit in front of the TV and be puppets for the politicians and the rest.  I say you are great.  Be different, any moron and follow the crowd.

  4. With a family you need to concentrate on your own little world at this time which does not of course mean that the causes you mentioned are without merit. Just make sure that you get that college degree. Good luck.

  5. Those Greenpeace supporting Darfur-saving Obama-voting Iraq war-protesting friends are trying to ensure that the children they have or will have in the future have a  decent world to inherit. These friends are trying to get your countrymen, women and children a decent healthcare system a decent standard of living where children are not bought up in poverty.

By the time the child you are carrying is grown up most of the worlds oil resources will have run out, if your government continue to believe that going to war with those countries which have oil like Iraq will solve these problems you child will be lucky if there is a world for him or her to live in.

The world is facing problems which could destroy society or even the planet if we do not take serious actions in the next few years.

You can join the millions who are burying their heads in the sand, many of them politicians and stand back and do nothing.

When thousands maybe millions are dying due to global warming, wars over oil, land, food and maybe even water.  When the worlds economies crash and maybe even democracy becomes a thing of the past, don't worry I am sure your child will understand that you did not have the time or energy to care or do anything about such things.

I do hope you are not a typical example of the American college student.
