Question:

Am I a feminist according to your definition?

Based purely on the following opinions that I am about to state, would you define me as a feminist? (This is more about your perception than my quest for a label.)

I believe that men and women are equal in worth and human dignity. The opinions and interests of men and the opinions and interests of women are of equal importance.

Statistical differences exist between the genders, some of which are purely based on genetics (eg. height) some of which may have some basis in genetics but are socially exaggerated (eg. children's choices of play activities), and some of which are complete social fabrications, (eg. the tendency of men not to wear skirts.)

People should not be confined to activities traditional for their gender purely because of their chromosomes. If somebody has the interest and the aptitude, nobody should hassle them about choosing a way of life that isn't typical for their gender. We should just be glad if they're contributing positively to society.

Men and women should be judged by the same criteria professionally and academically.

There is nothing inferior about the work that has been considered "women's work." It's important stuff that needs doing.

  1. Good question.  As a conservative-leaning 30-year-old male, I don't consider myself a "feminist," but I agree with all the opinions you stated.

While I don't believe in "confining" individuals to strict gender roles, I'm against the modern (past several decades) trend of actively discouraging women from pursuing homemaking as a career.  My wife, for example, has CHOSEN to be a full-time mother, a decision which I wholeheartedly support (despite the sacrifice of household income) and which I believe will be great for our kids.  What I resent is that the lifestyle my wife has chosen is portrayed by some feminists as abject failure.

I've heard that there's a movement within feminist circles to reclaim things that are distinctly feminine.  Is this true?  I've heard that full-time mothering isn't quite so stigmatized within the feminist community anymore.  My impression is that many of the feminists of the 70's and 80's tried to achieve "gender equality" by consciously adopting the worst stereotypical "male" traits (aggression, selfishness, materialism, promiscuity, etc.).  They should have called their movement "masculism."

    Has feminism since become "refeminized?"

Sorry for the off-topic ramble, just got going.

  2. Yes, you are.

  3. Hoorah! Yes you are a feminist! Rock on!

  4. Nah, you're an equalist. Modern day feminism for the most part is a man hating group who is on a quest to obtain superiority over men.

  5. Yes, you sound like a feminist to me.

  6. Defining oneself in the Modern Era as a Feminist would require that one formally hate others (whether consciously or not).  Only the Feminist can make this determination.  It's not for me to define whether one is hateful, it's really a matter of actions speaking louder than words.

  7. I read your views, and no you're not a feminist.

However I retract this statement if you have short hair and a bulky build.

  8. yes

  9. I think that you are wise.  And a feminist.

  10. Yes, I would define you as a feminist. You just rattled off basically everything classical feminism stands for.

  11. I don't believe in giving people titles that they don't choose themselves.

The term 'feminist' has so many meanings that it loses a lot of value to society - even if it means so much to those who take the mantle upon themselves.  Someone who claims to be a feminist may believe these things, yes.  They may also believe or practice differently.

  12. Check Section 1 here http://www.freewebs.com/feminism-evaluat...

and you can tell me whether you are a feminist or not.

From what you have said you don't look like a feminist to me, but a humanist or equalist.

  13. Absolutely.

More importantly: Does it fit yours?

  15. no. just sound like you want equality

  16. No you are not a feminist.

    You are normal.

  17. I wouldn't burden you with a label you might not want, but I would be honored to know you better and you'd definitely be welcome at my table.

  18. I don't think you sound like a feminist.  Those are things that I hope most people agree with.

  19. I would say your views mainly fit with the principles of equalism - that men and women are of equal worth, and that the rights of both genders should be given equal attention and consideration.

You seem to believe that gender differences are socialised though, and that the world should be gender neutral, which suggests that you could be a feminist.

  20. I think your constant need to have a man save you from the Evil Ganondorf makes you not look like a feminist

  21. In an ideal world, everyone would think like that <sigh>
