I told my brothers and mom that I am going to become a vegetarian and they all laughed and said I was becoming a hippie.

  1. No. Not all vegetarians are hippies. Now, I probably am. Lol. But I know other vegetarians that aren't.

  2. No, vegetarians and vegans are as diverse in their lifestyles and other choices as meat-eaters are.

And anyone who lived through the 1960s and 70s can tell you that vegetarianism wasn't widespread among hippies.

They are repeating  a  stereotype, pure and simple. Stereotypes and generalisations are parroted by the lazy and ill-informed.

  3. Don't take it to heart, I'm sure they are just kidding around. But seriously, not all vegetarians and vegans are hippies... it's just a stereotype.

  4. HIPPIES ARE IN THE 70s I don't think there are any hippies left

  5. Hahaha, next time tell them you demand a tie-die T-shirt, a bag of pot, and a peace symbol necklace. Also, you need a matching Tie-Die VW van such that you can drive across the country.

  6. Of course you're becoming a hippie.

    HIPPIE!!!

Just kidding. Vegetarians are from all different groups in society. If you start going to protests, wearing Burkenstocks, growing out your hair and go to Burning Man your family can call you a hippie.

  7. Nothing wrong with being a hippie. They were not all into hard drugs, many started the natural living movement: organic, vegetarian/vegan, human rights, environmental activism, etc.

  8. Nah.  Are all hippies vegetarians?

  9. just because your a vegetarian and you care about your body and the world around you as well as the animals your saving does not instantly have to give you a label as a hippie or "sensitive" your a human being and thats all you have to say some people can be so immature when someone tells them there views your family should be happy for you and more sipportive not making fun of you. There isnt anything even wrong with hippies there pro-peace so in that respects its another form of being a human being.Im Buddhist  an enviornmentalist and animal activist so does that mean I have to instantly be a Hippie?Even though i wouldnt mind the "label" i just go about being ME..........

  10. The hippie movement ended in the 70s.  There are still people who identify with aspects of it and are referred to as hippies, but that has nothing whatsoever to do with being a vegetarian.  My boss (who is old enough to have been a hippie back in the day, but wasn't) is a Nordstrom-wearing, Republican-voting, SUV-driving long-time vegetarian; does he sound like a hippie to you?

Your family is just repeating a dumb stereotype.  People are vegetarians for all kinds of reasons and most of them have nothing at all to do with hippie-dom.

  11. I am a veg and a hippie but I dont think thatt they are envoled with each other like I a hippie bc I like going barefoot and mud

  12. what's wrong with being a hippie? Not all hippies were pot smoking losers. Many were human rights activists that have made changes in the world.. that actually cared when nobody else did.

It's just a word that nowadays describes the stereotype built up by the opposition... apparently, caring about other people and fighting against injustice equates to being "weak"...

    right...

  13. lol, no, my family calls me that too.

A hippie does pott also, since I do NO drugs, I am not a hippie

  14. Being a vegetarian does not mean that you are a hippie. It just means that you care. And we should all care more, don't you think? That doesn't mean  that we should all be hippies.

  15. That's funny because it's true that so many go there with the hippie slur when it comes to vegetarianism.

Hippies get used to marginalize vegetarians I believe because they've already been marginalized and looked down upon by so many. It's a passive-aggressive way to try to shame you into conforming.

Though the conforming thing probably has something to do with the association since hippies were known to reject the mainstream including what was then the new way of growing things with lots of chemicals including pesticides, hericides, fungicides, petro-fertilizers. And after being harassed in the cities many went to farms/the country to live in relative peace and ended up growing a lot of their own food (including animals).

I grew up around hippies. My mom had a lot of friends who were hippies and let me tell you, none of them were vegetarians. I didn't meet a vegetarian until later and they were not hippies. I have since met hippies that became vegetarians, but also executive vegetarians, and punk vegetarians, and preppy vegetarians, and model vegetarians, and athlete vegetarians.

Being a hippie doesn't make you a vegetarian and becoming a vegetarian doesn't make you a hippie. You can be one or the other or you can be both but one doesn't make you the other.

You can have fun with this and turn it back around. You can tell them that yes you are becoming a hippie and are looking for bell bottoms and mushroom patches and want Grateful Dead records for gifts and are looking for your first car; a VW Bus so you can go camping across America as soon as you turn 18. Tell them you are going to make them hemp candles and brownies for their birthdays. Everytime they say something about it make sure to flash them the peace sign and a smile. :)

Alternatively you can mention that Einstein was also a vegetarian so that must mean you are an incredible genius now.

They'll either give it up or start playing with, rather than at you but it's their problem to solve not yours (though you do have to put up with it).

  16. There aren't any real hippies any more. They are joking.

  17. hippies.?? i think your mum and brothers forgot that hippies are history.... now there are emos goths punks but hippies are old.... and just beacause u r a vegetarian that doesnt mean u r  hippie. that just mean u dnt like killing animals. yes hippies are vegetarians bt they also have long hair with all the style (u know how a hippie is dude).....

    hope i helped

  18. no the hippies went home

  19. dont mind it..they're just fooling you!
