Am I a narcoleptic????

At work, everyday I fall asleep after a normal night of 8 hours of sleep. I have even tried mixing it up with more and less sleep but the problem is I fall asleep in the middle of typing sentences.

I fall asleep in the bathroom at work but always every day at my desk. I fight it and my eyes actually cross. Someone will walk by and I will wake up for a second them BAM im out again. I can't fight it anymore. The fact that I actually know I can't stay awake makes me worry Im a real narcoleptic. Also, if I read a book I fall asleep in the middle of it.

Why always reading and typing?

Thanks.

  1. You really need to see a doctor to find out what's going on. Get a physical.

  2. It sounds like you are having narcolepsy issues, yes.  Although the real question is what could be causing you to not get restful sleep.

I suggest you see your doctor as soon as you can so you can find out exactly what is causing these problems.  A few common catalysts of narcolepsy are restless leg syndrome and sleep apnea.

Sleep apnea is when you actually stop breathing in the middle of the night several times in an hour.  You "wake up", yet not completely, which basically causes you to get non-restful sleep.

Restless leg syndrome is basically what it sounds like, lots of twitching and movements while sleeping, which also causes non-restful sleep.

There are other causes, but what you want to do is talk to your doctor and have him set you up for a simple sleep study.  They will be able to monitor you and find out exactly what the problem is and go from there.  Narcolepsy is not something to be taken lightly as many people can pass out while driving or doing other things and end up harming themselves and others.  But many of the causes of narcalepsy are relatively easy to treat.
