Is it possible to be a work-aholic at sixteen?

I've worked at a grocery store for 5.5 months now.

I have called in twice due to illness and only requested five days off this whole time unlike some people who request at least 5 days off a month. I've never switched a shift because I had something else to do. I always take other people's shifts.

I am generally scheduled for two-three shifts a week but pick up three-four extra shifts weekly.

When work calls and asks me to take a shift, I always say yes even if that means rearranging my schedule and prior commitments. For example, I have to babysit on Saturday at 5:30 (I need to pick the girl up at a town 15 minutes away) but work needs me to work 3:30 until 7:30 so I convinced my parents to get her for me and watch her until I get home. They don't mind because I'll pay them.

Tonight, work called me thirty minutes before a shift needed to be covered and I rushed to get ready and be there. For doing all these extra shifts I've got two free coffee cards.

I never know when work will need me so I always have my cell phone with me (they call and text me all the time atleast 1 a day) and I wash my clothes late at night when I can't work by NYS law.

  1. maybe you just have a good work ethic. This is how I have been since I was 15, when I got my first job. Just dont get taken advantage of, I am 25 and I have never been able to say no when it comes to work, my boss says jump and I say how high, I have learned to live my life outside of work also. good luck to you

  2. If I were you, I would give it a bit of rest, but it is good that you know how to manage yourself in a work environment. If you enjoy being a  "work-aholic" and its not affecting school or anything, its fine.

  3. At this point, I don't think you're a 'work-a-holic'.  Right now, you have very good work ethics and understand the responsibility of work.  A workaholic is one who is so driven to be working, making money, or keeping busy, that they neglect their families, friends and ultimately themselves.  As long as you do not become compulsive about your work, I don't think you have anything to worry about.  Just don't let work take over your life, and you'll be fine!

  4. Not a real workaholic...but your getting there, especially since your blowing off other commitments(ie babysitting) Enjoy being young now, because you only have now to be a goof. A plus to you being such a dedicated employee is that you are reliable..which looks great on a resume, and when you look for other work your former employer can say to a new boss that you are very reliable and a great worker.

you are also on the right track to get to customer service.

  5. I don't know if I would call you a work-aholic but you definitely are a hard worker. Your on the right track for sure to the goal you want to reach. Maybe you should just concentrate on whether your happy working so much. Are you? would you like time to yourself or just time to do things? Does it bother you that you do so much work? If you said no to most of those then you should rethink your position on work. But you sound pretty commited to your job! Good Luck!
