Question:

Am I allowed to reuse a USPS Priority Mail Flat Rate Box?

I have the box from a previous package that someone sent me, now I need to send a gift to someone else. The item(s) would fit perfectly in the box, however, I'm not too sure if I'm aloud to use the box again to ship another item.

Is it okay to reruse a priority mail flat rate box again? I know that the box (or was it just stamps) costs money previously, and would also cost $$ if I were to purchase it at a post office.

If I am, are stamps (and of course return/ship. label) all I need to put on it?

thanks

  1. You may re-use the box. However you will have to pay the flat-rate price. Make sure to use new postage and to obliterate any addresses that were on it.

It is not a good idea to cross off the flat rate icon. You or the recipient  may be charged the difference in price between postages.

  2. only if you used for Priority mail -you can  use for that purpose only  if you tried to use for some thing something else

(like media mail or first class )and if the post office inspect

the recipient will get charged for postage due

the box is free from the post office as well

  3. Yes, you can reuse it for priority mail as long as all previous markings and addresses are covered or removed.

I've also used flat rate boxes for regular priority mail by covering the "flat rate" markings with priority mail stickers you can get at the post office. Our P.O. never seems to have the regular priority boxes, just the flat rate ones.

Also, keep in mind, if the box and its contents are over 13 oz., you can't just stick stamps on it and mail it. You either have to turn it in at the counter or put postage on it via the printed stickers you get out of the self-serve machines they have in the lobby of most post offices.

  4. Cover it with a brown paper bag, like wrapping paper, and you can use it with any purpose you want.
