Question:

Am I becoming a Hypochondriac? ?

I've been like this since third grade at my first health class, I had to go to the bathroom and just sit there for 15 minutes until the discussion was over, because they were talking about a type of disease.

I love shows like House MD and Mystery Diagnosis, but every time I watch those shows, I can't get to sleep because I start thinking I'm feeling a bit dizzy, maybe my heart beat's irregular, the muscle twitch in my leg could be from ALS or something similar, etc.

It's really beginning to get on my nerves. Someone said it could be anxiety, but isn't Hypochondria a specific type of anxiety? I usually don't freak out about other things, just health. I'm strong minded and am willing to do things other people are afraid to do, it's just that when I have time to think things over I begin to panic. (like one time during a class I thought may veins were a lot more noticeable and so I began to freak out thinking it was because of some disease, and my friends had to calm me down and convince me they weren't any different, it was just the lighting.)

The thing is that I'm not really like the Hypochondriac patients I've read about. I never tell anyone about how I feel. I hate doctors and I'm so terrified that if I go to them they'll tell me that I'm going to die. I can't help it.

Is there anything that can help me with this? I really hate it, I love science and used to be interested in the medical field before this came up. I want to be normal and not panic over these things.

I'm seriously scaring myself and sometimes when I go to bed I think I'm not going to wake up the next morning and I'm terrified.

Please, any help or anything is much appreciated.

  1. There are many different problems you may be suffering from, all different forms of anxiety disorders.  You may have a panic disorder triggered by health concerns, an obsession disorder surrounding your health, generalized anxiety with hypochondriac tendencies, etc.  The problem is, there is not a simple fix for anxiety problems, so you need to tell your mom and see a doctor who can diagnose what you have and help you to learn methods of coping with the health fears.

The good news is, none of these disorders will hurt you or kill you.
