Am I being unfair to my Syrian Hamster?

I just got a tiny male Long Hair Syrian Hamster 2 days ago (he is only 3 inches long). Kermy was originally in a 24"Lx18"W cage for the first night. I woke up only to find that he had escaped (I eventually found him) The bar spacing in my cage is .5" apart.

I don't want him to escape again, so until he gets big enough I currently have him in a 10 gal aquarium with a wire mesh top. In his aquarium I have a: Silent Spinner Wheel, water bottle, food dish, toilet paper roll, carefresh bedding and a snak shak log http://www.petsmart.com/product/index.jsp?productId=2753529.

I feel like I am being mean to him and not offering enough space.

What do you think??

  1. Syddles i went to your site and it wasx awsome !!!!! i am making the home-made hamster cage as we speak!

  2. I don't think you are being mean to your hamster.

You have provided him with enough space and with all those 'enrichments' he'll be the envy of other hamsters!

You can still make this enclosure more livable by providing additional hiding place for him.

  3. he'll be fine! you have alot better cage then half of the owners out there. just save your money until you can get him the cage you want.

  4. Yes you are being mean. Hamsters need room to run. They need ATLEAST a 20 gallon tank. And why can you not afford a bigger tank? The 20 gallons are only like 40 bucks. I'm 13 and I have about $2,000 in my bank account. If you cannot afford a 40 dollar tank, then I dont even know why you have a hamster. What about when he needs vet care? That ca cost anywear between 70 - 300 bucks. Obviously you cannot aford a hamster so I suggest giving it to a friend or selling him to someone who can give him a proper home.

Oh, and why on your home page does it say I love hamsters and know alot about them!? If you know alot about them then you know that your tank is too small and you need a bigger one.

  5. I know you cannot afford a bigger aquaruim so what youre dealing with is good but you can also make your cage heres my site: http://my-ham-dolce.piczo.com/?cr=2 just click on the page that says home-made cage and you can make a cage thats big enough for your cute little syrian

ps: i luv syrians there soo cute!!! i luv kermy lol

  6. well.. i guess its kinda mean but make sure you take him out during the day and eventually buy a cage with smaller gaps..  i suppose you have the wheel and fun things for him so its really ok .. let him get used to his surroundings then mayb try moving him to another cage once you get one

  7. Not if it is temporary. Then you are NOT unfair.
