Am I elegible for a British Passport?

Question

I was born in the UK post January 1983. My parents were not born in the UK but are British citizens by descent, as both have parents (i.e. my grandparents) born in the UK in the 1920s. British Nationality law states that to be eligible for a passport, those born after in the UK post Jan. '83 must have a parent a British citizen. I cannot find on any official website whether having a parent British by descent is sufficient in this situation. Thanks for your Help.

Where do you live? I guess the US?  Call the UK embassy in the country you live in they will explain you everything. If you are elegible or not.

I personally think that you can get a British passport

NOTE: Its very important that you will have your Grandmother's and you parents birth certificates. I think that you could get your UK very soon.

Citizenship of children who were born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983- British Nationality Act 1981

The Nationality Act provided three citizenships

1. Before 1 January 1983, almost every child born in the United Kingdom (see Note 1) was a citizen of the United Kingdom and Colonies. The only exceptions were children who were born to certain people holding diplomatic or consular status. Under the British Nationality Act 1981, which came info force on 1 January 1983, citizenship of the United Kingdom and Colonies was replaced by three new citizenships: British citizenship, British Dependent Territories citizenship (see Note 2) and British Overseas citizenship.

2. A child who was born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983 will be a British citizen if either the father (see Note 3) or the mother is a British citizen. A child who was born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983 will also be a British citizen if either the father or mother, although not a British citizen, is legally settled (see paragraph 9) in the United Kingdom. In any other circumstances, a child who was born in the United Kingdom on or after 1 January 1983 will not be a British citizen.

3. A child who was born in a qualifying territory (see Note 4) on or after 21 May 2002 will also be a British citizen if the father (see Note 3) or mother was a British citizen or legally settled either in the United Kingdom or that territory.

If u were born in UK before 1st of January 1983, u are automatically a British Citizen & must have Birth Certificate, if u dont have British Birth Certificate contact the Registry office (if u are in UK) or Embassy/High Commission if u are out of UK to get ur BC. Once u have ur BC ... apply for British passport.

For people born after 1st Jan 1983 in UK, with parents holding British Passports are automatically British too. Contact British Embassy in the country u are located for further assistance.
