Question:

Am I eligable for a council home, please help?

I have been living with my partner in his parents house for the past few months. It is a 5 bedroom council house and other than us only his parents and one siblling live there, meaning there are 2 spare bedrooms as his other brothers/sisters have all moved out.

I have just found out I'm pregnant and wondered would we still be eligable even though we are staying with his parents in a house that has enough room?

even though there is enough space, I dont want to live with his family once the baby is born, I need to have my own kitchen etc. We both work hard full time but still cant afford a place as we live in London and the rent is ridiculous. I moved into his house so we could save but now this has happened, I dont think there is anyway.

Proper answers would be greatly appreciated.

  1. yes anyone can apply for acouncil home but the waiting lists are high (tooke me 3 years in bolton , northeast) , they may also put you in a low housing category as each categiry/band is based on circumstances and as you inlaws is not overcrowded they will see it as enough room etc

what you could do is get the in laws to write a support letter stating they dont want you living there (even if they do) they could say you dont get on and they want there own space or have others moving in

another thing you could do is tell your midwife its making you depressed living with the in  laws and you need you own space she could also writ a support letter

as you live in london i wouldnt expect to be offered a home before the baby is born tho i suppose it depends where in london you want to live but i assume most waiting lists will be very long even for small flats

some councils have bidding systems where you register with them then bid for suitable properties on line , this can also take time but seems to be quicker than the old system of just waiting for an offer

    good luck
