Question:

Am I his uncle or cousin or both?

My grandmother gave birth to my mother who gave birth to me.

My grandmother remarried and gave birth to a kid who had a kid who had him.

So my grandmother is his great-grandmother, but my grandfather is not his great-grandfather.

What relation is that? Great removed cousin uncle or something else?

  1. This is probably the easiest way to think of the relationship.  He is your first cousin, twice removed.  Your mother is actually his grandfather's half sister, but I don't believe that there is any way to express that distinction through four generations.  If you have grandchildren, they will be his third cousins.

  2. I would think distant cousin

  3. I'm going to name everyone to make it easier. I'll guess at the genders.

My grandmother (Alice) gave birth to my mother (Barbara) who gave birth to me (Charles).

My grandmother remarried and gave birth to a kid (Bruce) who had a kid (Carl) who had him (Daniel).

Bruce and Barbara are half-brother and half-sister. You and Carl are half first cousins, although no one but a genealogist showing off would use "Half".

Daniel is your half first cousin once removed. When you have a child (Doris), she and Daniel will be half second cousins.

When Daniel has a child (Edward), Edward will be your half first cousin twice removed.

  4. You gma=his great gma

So he would be your mother's step sisters grand son. So your step aunt's grand child. You are a cousin but barely.

  5. Cousins (also called first cousins) are people whose nearest common ancestor is a grandparent. Second cousins’ nearest common ancestor is a great-grandparent, and so on. The confusing “removed” aspect is a matter of different generations. First you name the closest relationship, i.e., cousin. The child of your cousin is your cousin once removed. (The parent of your cousin is not your cousin once removed, but your aunt or uncle.) The grandchild of your cousin is your cousin twice removed. The child of your second cousin would therefore be your second cousin once removed.

I made myself a little chart, to get your situation straight in my mind. You and his parent who's descended from the same woman, your grandmother, are half-cousins (half because of her having different husbands as your respective grandfathers). Because he is another generation down, it's once removed.

So you and he are half cousins once removed. Many people ignore the "half" part, BTW, and would just say they're cousins once removed.

BTW, if you ever have kids, your children and this guy will be second cousins, the nearest relative in common a great grandparent.
