Question:

Am I hoping for too much?

I've always liked volleyball but never played (too self-conscious & shy). This year will be my last year of HS (senior) and I am really wanting to try out for volleyball.

I know that this is a long shot but if I start practicing (running to get in shape, ball drills, etc) there is a chance I could get really really good. (Everyone supposedly makes the team, so I'm not all that concerned w/ that part.)

Now to the question, is it possible for someone who doesn't have much experience to get a volleyball scholarship? I know, I'm a tad bit optimistic [?] but I really think w/ hard work I could get one or at least be considered/looked at?

Thanks for reading :]]

  1. Sorry to say it but, i doubt that you would get a scholarship.

  2. I've been playing since forth grade and i didn't get a scholarship. It depends on the college though.  Some just ask if your interested.  The college that actually do the scouting are tough to get into.

  3. If you want it, work for it. Nothing's impossible in this world. Just don't think negatively cause that would definitely bring you down. On my 5th grade, I started playing volleyball and became really good at it. And guess what, there was this scout who saw me and said that he wanted me to play for their university when I get to college. To think, that was my first year playing and i was just in Grade 5! What did I say, nothing's impossible. Goodluck to you =)

  4. theres nothing you cant do...if you want it bad enough and you have the passion to go out and chase that dream (your scholarship) then you will get what you deserve!! work hard and believe in yourself

  5. Well when I tried out for the volleyball team in 6th grade, I didn't know anything about it either, but if you can do the basics control bumps & make underhand serves, you'll be able to learn if you're on the team. You can practice your bumps by having someone lightly toss the ball to you, and you try to bump it back to them. Then gradually, you'll want the ball to be spiked to you.

  6. As you stated, you are being optimistic,

If you worked every day from now on and if you have athletic talent as well, you can get a scholarship.  You have to be a real athlete first and then work as a volleyball player next.

I would not think that you could get a scholarship, but I would never tell you that you WILL not get a scholarship.  There are over 300 D1 schools.  Some with programs that are not very good.  You might get a scholarship to one of those schools.

There are many examples of players starting a sport in their sophomore or even junior year and now playing at the D1 level or the pros.

    Good luck
