Question:

Am I losing money using Oyster and should I get monthly travel card?

Here's my typical weekly use.

4 days: I go from zone 2 to zone 1 and back by bus only (so 2 pounds a day)

2 days: I go from Zone 2 to Zone 1 by bus AND tube (6 pounds each day, is it?)

1 day i don't travel

If I'm not mistaking, that's 20 pounds a week, so 90 pounds a month (assuming there's 4.5 weeks in a month). The monthly travel card is 89 pounds. Should I buy it or keep using Oyster?

Does my calculation make sense?

  1. well a travel card is paid for so if by chance you need to travel more then you can but hats only between zone 1&2

but the beggist downfall is if you have meetings else were or what ever you will have to pay on top of your monthly card

basicly look at it like this

monthly travel card is like a contract phone you buy it and thats it

a oyster card is like payg if you dont travel you dont pay!!

and if its only a pound your only lossing £12 a year and thats not much for the freedom and fexibilaty of a oyster card

personaly id keep with the oyster card! but if you travel to work and dont travel any were by public transport and your realy worried about a pound then its realy up to you if you wish to save a pound and get monthly travel card

but my advice is stick witht the oyster card!!

  2. Bus is now only 90p. If you take into account that the average month is about four week then you would spend £80 not £90, but are you likely to make any additional journeys each week? Anything more than 5 return trips would make it worth while and even more so in a five week month.

Would be worth it is you make at least two more trips by bus/tube a week for any reason. If not then might be worth staying on pay as you go.

  3. I have a monthly zone 1 and 2 travel card. When I go outside these zones on the tube, I pay extra. When I go outside these zones on the bus I pay nothing. Speak to a station assistant about how a zones 1 and 2 travel card can also work as an all zones bus pass.
