Am I nuts for driving 40 miles each way to work?

Got a great job but its 40 miles away. My car loves gas and the tolls are 5 bucks a day. Financially, I spend about 400 dollars a month just to get back and forth to work. That's about 1/8th of my income. Math aside, what distance would you go for a good job?

  1. you could get a cheaper car, and some people travel alot further than that, me personally only travel 12 miles, but thats my preference.

  2. I use to drive a little over 250 miles each way. I started work at 3pm on Friday and got off my last shift 11pm Sunday. In that time I worked 40 hours. I did a 16,a 8 and another 16 shift. That way I worked another 40 hours 15 miles from home. I was the only one working in a family of five. Gas was cheaper and I was younger.

  3. In the area where I live, such commutes and much longer ones are not unusual.  Many in these parts rely on mass transit on commuter trains, it's cheaper, and more relaxing than being stuck in traffic.  Check it out and see if there is a train station near you that can get you where you need to go, then maybe you can take a subway or walk the rest of the way to work, if it's a good job, it's relative, I wouldn't go all that way to work for Walmart, but if it's a good job with potential for advancement and better pay than the opportunities you would find closer to home, 40 miles isn't an unusual commute for a job that is on your career track....
