Am I of German descent?

I am wondering if I am of German descent, or if any of my blood is German. My Great grandfather and grandmother are from Berlin. I wanted to know if any of their genes would carry down to me via the bloodline.I know it diminishes, just don't know how much.

Thanks to all that answer!

  1. if your grandmother was 100% german you would be 25%.. so if your grandmother and father were 100%, you would be 50%

  2. If your gg-grandparents were born in Berlin, then you are of German descent.  If you are male, then you will have evidence of their genes, which carry through the male line.

  3. You're of German descent, yes, but you do not have German citizenship unless one of your parents does.

  4. You get your Autosomal DNA 50-50 from both parents coming down from all of your ancestors. So it doesn't matter what line it comes from. Most of your DNA is Autosomal.  Y & Mitochondrial are a very minute part.

Now, if you were to do research and as you work back any percentages will probably change.  For instance your German Great Grandfather might have had  a many times great grandfather from France, Poland, or Slovakia.  This sort of thing will be true of any of your family lines.

  5. never diminishes, One man in a  town in Ireland was traced back to bones found in a cave near the town that were more then 5000 yrs old. Odd thing he was the only one.

  6. Yes you would. Blood does not diminish, especially as close as great grandparents. You could have had a Japanese ancestor 300 years ago and you would still have some of that blood(probably a fraction like 1/200th though). You would probably by 50% German if you use percentages, and I don't know about your other side of the family, but you could be even more then that. I personally am around 75% German and I am very proud of it. I even speak German and drape a German flag in my room. Deutschland!

  7. if both of them are German (They could have moved to Berlin from anywhere) then yes, you are part German.  You would be 1/4 German if they were both full German and they are the only German blood in your family.  This is because one of your four grandparents would be their kid causing them to be 100% German as well.  They may not be the only German blood though, families have intermixed a great deal and it is hard to really track it anymore.  If you really want to know how much of what you are, you will have to do a complete geneology going back at least six generations.

  8. yes
