Am I on the right path to acting?

I want to be an actress more than anything. I'm not just saying that either, I have been involved with both church and school acting groups. I have a great ability to memorize stuff, I have memorized a 4 minute monologue in just like 30 minutes. I moved to Wilmington, NC [I have heard that it is the East Coast Hollywood, since there are movies and TV shows that are filmed here] I feel like I have taken multiple steps to become an actress. I know that it is good to have experience and I am planning on getting involved with my college's acting program. Am I taking all the right steps for acting? School doesn't start until January for me, so is there any reputable theaters or talent agencies in this town? I have memorized long parts of movies and have been told that I should take acting lessons to better my skills and that I do have skills to act. And I am planning on changing my major to Drama/Fine Arts. Help please?

  1. It sounds like you have a lot of motivation which is great. At this stage, it's all about building your resume - ie. training and experience. Sign up for classes (is your program a BFA?) and just get as much experience as you can. During the summer, go to some of the regional combined theatre auditions for summer stock opportunities (this link has several listed - http://www.redbirdstudio.com/AWOL/combau...

Don't concern yourself with stuff like memorizing movies. While being able to learn lines quickly is certainly an asset to actor, it's not something you're going to put on your resume. In fact, take an improv class. Improv is a much better skill to have for times when you've dropped a line.

    Good luck!

  5. Acting does not happen overnight nor becoming an actress. You are definetely in the right path. The key point is to be an artist. Just pursue it, perform, perform, perform, in any possible play to get seen by as many people possible... You also have to identify a style that you want. A person, group, or company that really make you think "I want to do that". Find a way to practice with their technique (and i said practice, besides study). practice is finally what will get you on stage in a solid way. Make yourself clear if you want either a JOB or an artistic activity that will make you happy. Being notorious is not necessary being talented, or, even worse, it will make you compromise many ethical things that you might not like to do or act in plays that you dont really like. The commercial circuit not always cross roads with the pure artistic lane, so you have to be focused in what you deeply wish. Get your family support. Welcome! Best of luck
