Question:

Am I over medicating my cat?!

My cat had surgery for 3 absessed teeth on Tuesday. The vet gave me Buprenex (Cat Morphine ?) for her to administer every 12 hours and an antibiotic (also every 12 hours).

I agree with giving her the antibiotic until it runs out, however when I give her the pain meds, she just ends up sleeping all day and I feel like I'm putting her into a drug haze..

She doesn't seem to be in pain and is eating regularly, so should I continue with the pain meds? I feel like if the vet gave them to me to give to her it's the right thing to do-

  1. Cats are masters at hiding pain.  Give her the pain meds and let her sleep.  She needs all the extra rest and will heal better.

    Good Luck!

  2. Your doing the right thing... the vet perscribed what was best for your dog.  If it is in a drug haze it will end when the dog is through with the meds... they don't get hooked! ;0P,

  3. Morphine would make anyone sleepy, so don't be alarmed. As long as you're following the vets orders, it sounds like everything is just fine. If you notice her eating less, then call the vet. Other wise, keep it up.

    Good luck!

  4. FOLLOW THE DOCTORS ORDERS

IF YOU HAVE EVER BEEN MEDICATED WITH HEAVY PAIN KILLERS.. YOU WILL NOTICE THAT YOU BEGIN TO BE SLUGGISH AS WELL... THIS IS GOOD... REST HELPS THE BODY HEAL FASTER... AFTER ALL HER MEDS ARE GON YOU WILL BE HAPPY TO SEE SHE IS BACK TO NORMAL

    BEST OF LUCK

  5. Buprenex is very safe.  Treating pain in cats is a new and wonderful practice - they can rest easily, which allows them to heal faster.  Your vet sounds like she is on the cutting edge - congratulations!
