It was my birthday a couple of days ago and my parents took me to the Gap store to buy me some clothes. With the purchases that were made, my mom suggested that I buy a bag with my new wardrobe. After we purchased everything, we walked around the store a little bit more to see if there was anything we can buy for my little brother's birthday which was coming up. Suddenly a lady said, "I need to check something" and took our bags, looked through it and gave it back to us. My family and I were like..."ok" and just kept looking around( I'm assuming she thought we took something) Since there was nothing to buy, we walked out but the sensors were beeping. The same lady came to us and said, "Can I see your bags, maybe it's just a tag there that needs to be removed." So she took the bag, ripped off some kind of tag (square shaped that says, "Remove before washing" and just kept looking through it! She was so annoying and rude! My dad later on told us that he felt like some kind of crook lol. So a couple days later, I went back to the GAP to return the bag because I didn't like it much. The same employees there gave me awkward stares and it was totally uncomfortable. Then the cashier saw the ripped tag and gave me an even more "rude" stare. After I returned it, i looked around to see if there was anything else I could buy with the gift card i had just recieved from someone and I was waiting infront of the dressing room. Some other lady was behind me and the employee took HER, opened a room for her and just walked right passed me. Right then and there, I put all the clothes back and just left the store. Did i do something wrong? When I returned the bag with the "ripped" tag, is that considered damaged? Does that come out of the employees salary or something? I wasn't even the one who ripped it off! Did my family and I behave in a "robber" type way?

Thanks :)

  1. That's a store that's never heard of customer service.

There are security tags with bar codes on them that trigger scanners as you leave.  They're called RIFF tags ( I forget what the acronym means, but it generates a unique radio-frequency pulse)

The employee likely is putting these tags INSIDE the bag when she checks them the first time to give her an excuse to check them again.

Another, darker possibility, is that the employee is putting a piece of clothing in your bag and retrieving it when she checks the second time.  Did she take anything out of your bag?
