Question:

Am I overreacting in this argument with my Dad?

We went shopping in the U.S. for back-to-school clothing. Clothes are way cheaper in the U.S. than where I live. Anyways, my aunt bought me a pair of running shoes for my birthday. I told my Dad about it, and he says that I made him look insensitive. He says he has asked me about needing running shoes before, and I have said no, which is true. But what has just occured to me is that I needed school shoes, and being in the middle of the summer, I hadn't really thought about school. He is mad at me now, but I really need to know, does he have a right to be mad at me? Or am I just blowing this way out of proportion?

  1. well if you told your aunt that you wanted the running shoes and she got them then maybe but if she just got them for you then no, not at all. even if she did know you wanted them and you told her he still shouldnt make it such a big deal. its not that bad! plus its done and over with and there is nothing he can do about it.

  2. that makes no sense.  he has no reason to be mad at u.

  3. You sound Swiss - are you?

I think you did nothing wrong and your Dad is hypersensitive.

I am hypersensitive so I know it when I see it.

What I would do is go to Dad, tell him you are sorry for any misunderstanding.

Tell him he is the best dad in the known universe.

Tell him if buying you a 2nd pair of shoes will make him feel better (you can say this as a joke if it seems appropriate) you can look at them online together - and order him a pair as well

    (Try shoes.com or jcpenney.com)

I wish I still had a parent to have such wonderful arguments with. Give yours a huge hug! They go far too soon.

    Take care.

  4. He is being stupid. Someone bought you a birthday present and he says you made him look insensitive. That does not even make sense

  5. sounds like your dad wants to get something for you for school that you want and need . SO ask him he wants to be part of your life.

  6. wow, your dad sounds deep.  No, you are not overreacting.

  7. you're blowing it way out of proportion...he can get over it that your aunt bought you shoes before he did..if he really is that jealous...he could go buy you a better pair???

  8. first of all i want to say silly arguments always happen. i don't blame you, but he might be a bit embarrassed by your aunt. so i think everything is gonna be all right with you guys, you just have to be more organized and plan things ahead.

  9. no that is dumb its just shoes that is really dumb

  10. I understand where your dad is coming from. He doesn't want people to think he wouldn't provide for his child. Tell him you didn't mean for that to happen and you didn't think about the shoes when he asked you about them. Your dad means well, just make sure you tell your aunt thank you.

  11. Your Dad just feels embarrassed and like he doesn't provide for you.  He doesn't want anyone to think that.  Jut explain to him what you just did in the same words and tell him that you are sorry.  He will understand that you just didn't think about needing shoes at the time when he asked you about them.  Then just tell him it was a nice gift for your Aunt to give you because it is something that you can use.  I am the same way when it comes to my son.  I don't care if my sister (which is his Aunt) gives him things but sometimes I feel like she thinks I am not doing my parental responsibility.  I don't think she actually thinks that I think she just wants to be included in his life and she likes to buy him things too.  Just apologize to your Dad and tell him you are sorry about hurting his feelings.  He will really appreciate the apology.  Your Dad sounds like a really great Dad and wants to be certain you have all of your needs met.

  12. ugh. don't worry about it.

  13. He should not be mad at you. At the beginning he should of been a little confused but not mad!
