Question:

Am I qualified to create and publish credible educational curriculum materials?

As a special ed teacher, I am often frustrated with the textbooks and other materials I must modify for my students with learning disabilities. Most times, I end up creating new materials- especially with math. I find that simple with clear instructions work best for them.

My question is... Can I create a workbook and publish it? I don't know if you need to be a PhD for that or have certain years of experience.

I've been teaching this population for 3 years and I only have a Master's.

  1. You could be a drop out with the IQ of a turnip and still publish a book. Many teachers make their own curriculum to meet their needs.  Getting curriculum published might be difficult and then you would need to try to get school systems to adopt it. Many teachers make their own resources especially special ed teachers.

  2. Experience is often much better than qualifications.  Go for it.

  3. GO FOR IT...I am a SPED teacher and working (slowly) on a book that will help give perspective that college totally blows at doing.  Your credibility is your degree and years experience.  If you can make it, use it in your class with success, you can market it as your own.

You don't need any PHD to be a writer or a curriculum developer.  If you have a curriculum coordinator in your district, work with him/her to make sure it meets all the standards it should.

    GOOD LUCK.   Sounds cool.

  4. As far as I know, there are no specific credentials to publish educational workbooks, except finding a publisher willing to edit it and publish it for you.  You sound like you know what is needed for the students. See if the publishers agree!

  5. I don't think it is really a matter of your institutional education but more a matter of whether or not a publisher is interested in your work and since most of the editor's will be PhD's they will decide that. Many people get their PhD's by publishing  and not going to through the school process and you already have a master's I would contact a publisher of educational matter and send a sample of your work and ask. You probably can get published even it only goes to people with kids with special ed needs who are home schooling, though I myself do not approve of home schooling, there are special cases for everything. I say do it-what have you got to lose.
