Question:

Am I qualified to work for the US military as a civilian?

I heard that there are several civilian jobs available for the military and I'm planning to go for the Air force, Navy of USCG.

Anyway, I have several questions about this.

As a civilian, will I get stationed to military bases or will be able to work at a base of my choice? Do I go home everyday or am I going to live in a base?

Do I need to to take the ASVAB to qualify for civilian jobs?

And another thing is that I'm only a High School graduate, are there any civilian jobs in the military that do not require a degree?

If ever I'm not qualified for a civilian job, I'll probably join as a military personnel. And the last question I have in mind is that, after I'm done serving the military and I still don't have a degree, will I be able to qualify for a civilian job in the given branches that I mentioned?

Would I be able to cross brances?

e.g:

work as a military personnel in the Navy then as a civilian in the USCG after retirement. Or Navy-to-AF, USCG-to-AF, and so on.

  1. I am a civilian employee for the Department of the Army. You are hired for a specific job at a base for federal facility. The hours differ depending on the job etc. I am a mechanic and work from 7-4:30 mon-fri. You do not have to take the ASVAB. I have never seen a entry level civil service job. You have to submit a resume listing why you are qualified for the job. Then the job or jobs go to the most qualified person. So if you apply for a mechanic job with no experience then everyone with more than one day of experience is considered more qualified than you. Also education can substitute experience.
