  1. Yes, it can get overwhelming, if you spend your energy, trying to define all the relationships.

    So, don't.

Genealogy traces your ancestors.. parents/ grandparents, etc. Aunts/uncles, etc, are gravy.

    Now.. siblings share parents.

    1st cousins share grandparents

    2nd cousins share gr grandparents

3rd cousins share gr gr grandparents.

and so forth.  When they don't share the same generation, then you get into removed.

If your gr grandmother is someone else's gr grandmother, or their gr gr gr grandmother is your gr grandmother, yes, you are related. It won't necessarily help your actual research.

Zero in on your ancestors, and their immediate family. You have little reason to "bring it down" to every living person, unless you are organizing a reunion.

If you download a genealogy program.. you can enter as many or as few persons as you want, and the program will figure the technicalities.  Do you NEED it to find where gr grandma is buried? probably not.

K.I.S.S.  ... keep it simple, sweetie.

  2. Sure. Call your great grandmother Abigail and her brother, whose great grandchildren will become her great grand nieces and nephews, Albert. Call Abigail's daughter Beatrice and Albert's son Bruce, and so on.

    Abigail & Albert = siblings

    Beatrice & Bruce = 1st cousins

    Charlotte & Charles = 2nd cousins

    Mark & Daniel = 3rd cousins

    Bruce is Abigail's nephew

Charles is Abigail's great nephew / grand nephew

Daniel is Abigail's great great nephew and your third cousin.

Substitute names as needed if you want to show this to one of your third cousins.

  3. Yes you are related they are cousins.

I believe it would be third cousins once removed(they are of a different generation than you).

    Relationship Terms

Sometimes, especially when working on your family history, it's handy to know how to describe your family relationships more exactly. The definitions below should help you out.

    Cousin (a.k.a "first cousin")

Your first cousins are the people in your family who have two of the same grandparents as you. In other words, they are the children of your aunts and uncles.

    Second Cousin

Your second cousins are the people in your family who have the same great-grandparents as you., but not the same grandparents.

    Third, Fourth, and Fifth Cousins

Your third cousins have the same great-great-grandparents, fourth cousins have the same great-great-great-grandparents, and so on.

    Removed

When the word "removed" is used to describe a relationship, it indicates that the two people are from different generations. You and your first cousins are in the same generation (two generations younger than your grandparents), so the word "removed" is not used to describe your relationship.

The words "once removed" mean that there is a difference of one generation. For example, your mother's first cousin is your first cousin, once removed. This is because your mother's first cousin is one generation younger than your grandparents and you are two generations younger than your grandparents. This one-generation difference equals "once removed."

Twice removed means that there is a two-generation difference. You are two generations younger than a first cousin of your grandmother, so you and your grandmother's first cousin are first cousins, twice removed.

  4. Your great-grandmother's great-great-nieces and nephews are the great-grandchildren of her sibling(s) ... so you and they are the same generation, and third cousins.

  5. Cousins.

Take a sheet of paper and write the names out and you can see for yourself.
