Let me start this off by saying that i have a learning disability and dyslexic. I go to a special ed school, keep this in mind. ok so one day during english class about a week ago i got a paper cut and i asked my teacher for a band aid in front of the class. This teacher always thinks im trying to be the class clown but i am not. So when i asked her for the band aid she must have thought i was trying to disrupt the class and she called me retarded. This made me really upset concidering my whole entire school is (special) and all of our teachers know it to. I started to think to my self if its true and i used to get picked on at my old school a lot and when i transfered in to special ed i felt really safe and that no one would pick on me for being stupid and then my teacher calls me retarded. I talked to thropists that work at the school and they told the teacher she said sorry but i still fell stupid. Am I RETARDED?

  1. I'm sure her remark must have really hurt, and I don't blame you.  That teacher should have never, ever said anything like that to you or any other student.  She should be repremended.  Your post here sounds very intelligent, and your grammer and spelling are better than 80% of the stuff I see on answers.  From what little I have seen of your writing, you don't sound one bit retarded.  Please try to move on and don't let this insensitive remark bother you so much.  To answer your question, no you are not retarded, in my opinion.

  2. No you are not retarded.  You sound quite intelligent to me!  She should have never humiliated you especially in front of other students.  An apology is not good enough for what she did. I don't understand why they put teachers with this kind of character in the classsrooms with special needs students.  Some teachers just don't have a heart.  Don't let her get to you!  She is oviously a woman of poor character if she is lwering your self esteem by humiliating you.  Keep your head up and smile!  Don't sweat these things!  She ain't nothing to worry about!

  3. Why do you attend a special school? I was recommended to go to a special school the summer before twelfth grade but I rejected it.  I didn't like the fact that I couldn't interact with other general education students.  I think it was important for me to be around with other peers that didn't have special needs.  It taught me to be tolerant of everyone, not just those with special needs.  I would try not to be sensitive and just move on with your life.  You have to understand that we are not perfect and that the world is corrupt.  There is nothing anyone can do about it.  It doesn't matter which school you attend, there will always be mean people unless you attend an inclusive school.

  4. No, you are not retarded. You write better than a lot of high school graduates.

First, I think your parents should file a formal complaint against the teacher with the school district. I don't think she should be fired necessarily, but it was an unforgivable thing to do. No matter how much you goof off in the class, you do not deserve disrespectful treatment. She needs to apologize to you in front of the class and needs to make amends.

There are some people who because of their positions, are capable of creating a great deal more harm than others. These include people who have a great deal of influence and power over the lives of other people. These include counselors, the clergy, parents and teachers. These folks are supposedly trustworthy and must put the welfare of those in their care above anything else including anger, irritation or distress.

Because of the possibility for hurt, as that which you experienced, they are held to a higher standard. She has not met the minimal standard and needs to receive an severe reprimand. I'm sorry for what she did to you and I hope you receive some resolution.

Finally, it is important that you understand that learning disabilities have nothing to do with the functioning of your brain. It is the wiring in the brain that has a problem, so your learning is impacted simply because of your brain connections. It is the equivalent of a frayed cord on a lamp. There is nothing wrong with the lamp or the bulb, just the connection. Your ability to reason is not impacted, obviously.

  5. She should not be let off by just saying she's sorry. I don't know if she should be fired  but she should be dealt with by the  top administrator and punished. You are not retarded and don't let some ignorant person ruin you're self esteem.

  6. hm, coherent sentenes, easily legible, and easier to read than half of the questions on Y!A

i dont think youre a r****d. youre able to analyze whats going on around you and comprehend it all. and last time i checked, dyslexia is a learning disability, not a form of mental retardation.

anyways, you are not retarded, no matter what the teacher says. dont listen to her, she just fails (at life, among other things)

and yes, i do think she should be fired. not for lowering your self esteem, but acting in a totally unprofessional way.  her behavior is disruptive of your learning, and may also be affecting your classmates.

  7. No you not r****d, just stuupid.

  8. I am a Special Education teacher and I know FOR A FACT that what she said is wrong. Something like that should not slide. You need to speak to the Principal or the Assistant Principal.  Don't let that slide, because if you do, she may think that she can keep doing that

As far as you being Mentally Retarded....You could be BUT you could also not be. Being classfied as MR is just based on your IQ level. You could simply ask a teacher or the Assistant Prinicpal to tell you the diagnosis that is written on your IEP. If you ask, they should tell you.  Now if you find out your diagnosis is MR do not flip out! Individuals with MR can still do most academic things anybody else can do. They just need to work MUCH harder. I'm guessing you are older, maybe High School and you write very well, so that shows one thing that you overcame and are able to do well. So just ask the Assistant Prinicipal what your diagnosis is and take it from there.

Good Luck....and don't let that teacher get away with that. What she said was disgustingly rude!

  9. You sound quite smart to me.  What she said is a reflection on her, not on you.  Show her how intelligent you really are by forgetting about it, forgiving her, and moving on.

  10. You are not retarded.  I think that you should, or you your parents, go to the principal or superintendant about this.  Maybe the entire school staff could benefit from some politically correct training, or sensitivity training.

Keep in mind that the words "r****d" and "retarded" means different things to different people.  It's meaning is currently evolving in our society.
