Question:

Am I safe to disable my wireless router security key, providing I have good antivirus programs?

My wireless router worked horribly from the word go. It kept knocking everyone off and geting connected took forever. I disabled the key feature so that my internet connection is now considered an unsecure network. Just like that, all my problems staying connected came to a screaching halt. Since I have state of the art antivirus, coupled with windows defender, shouldn't I be ok should someone try to get into my files....as long as I clean out my temp files, history, and cookies everyday?

  1. No, the security KEY that you install onto your router prevents outsiders for piggy backing onto your net work.  Your anti virus does "not" protect or stop this action.  This KEY, when properly installed should not slow the connection in any way.

  2. A securtiy key only keeps others from Piggybacking on your signal, and the only thing that does is slow your connection speed if you get 2 or 3 people in the area piggybacking off of you. Antivirus software and a firewall protects your PC and files, and stealths your ports form hackers.

Some routers have firewalls as well but a good Antivirus and Firewall installed in your pc is Better in my opinion.

You should be fine , Just be alert of your connection signal dropping off suddenly, probably means someone is piggybacking .

  3. Absolutely NOT.  Your wireless security key prevents others from getting onto your network and either 1) using your ISP and/or 2) hacking your computes.  In extreme situations, it can even prevent them from taking over your router and locking you out.

An anti-virus looks for bad programs running or trying to run on your machine.

    Totally different functions.  Both necessary.

    Hope that helps.

  4. no your antivirus protects against viruses not from other people using your internet. so if you were asking if it was gonna stop people from using your router then no you need a password but its very stupid to do because hackers can easily get into your files
