Question:

Am I taking good care of my guinea pigs?

I've owned my two guinea pigs for about 3 months now. Here is my routine with them:

(In the morning)

- Take pigs out of cage and put them in floorpen for floortime

- They have fleece bedding so I then sweep up the poo etc

- I use a cleaner to clean out their pigloo daily

- They have a 2nd level to their cage that is plastic so I clean it/wipe it off daily.

- Their bowls for their food get cleaned with soap once daily

- Their water gets changed daily

- I then refill their hay rack

- (After pigs are back in cage) I give them a bowl of lettuce and other greens, and every other day an orange slice.

Does it sound like I'm taking the best possible care of my guinea pigs?

Thanks in advance!!

  1. That sounds great.

What type of hay and pellets are you feeding? How big is the cage?

  2. Sounds like your doing an excellent job.

One thing though is, make sure that the soap your using is mild and it is used sparingly. Also, make sure you take them out and play with them for a bit each day so you don't seem like a total stranger to them.

    Other than that, your good.

Yes it sounds like your taking the best possible care of your guinea pigs.

    Good Luck !

  4. Wow! I have a guinea pig and clean its cage once a week. You are doing excellent. Make sure you give it greens (parsley). Great Job!:)

  5. You are doing excellent! Keep that going=)

  6. Super guinea pig care! The only thing I can see as a problem is using soap in the food bowls. Other than that, AWESOME! You are a wonderful example for all pet owners!

    Keep up the good work!

  7. wow

you are the super guinea pig owner!

most people try to do that once a week

you are taking excellent care of your guinea pigs!

  8. Sounds like you are doing really well!

There are a few things I would comment on - although obviously I may just be misunderstanding your post...

    1) Does the second level have any type of bedding on it? If not, it probably should. Firstly, plastic is very slippery for the pigs to walk on, and secondly if they pee they will be walking in puddles!

    2) You mention refilling the hay rack. Guinea pigs need hay available at all times. If you are just keeping it topped up then great! But if they have usually finished it you probably need to give them more.

    3) Greens daily is great (so long as it isn't iceburg obviously). But fruits are high in sugar so should be limited to twice per week.

I personally don't feed orange because citrus fruits are very acidic. Other good fruits include apple, pear, kiwi etc. My pigs love strawberry! Of course if your pigs love oranges then fine - but maybe consider a bit more variety.

Anyway, that's just my suggestions. Your piggies sound really well looked after. Congrats!
