I've noticed an average of 5 to 8 M.P.G. decrease while using 10% Ethanol

  1. it can supposedly release other harmful chemicals that arent good for our lungs.

we are screwed. we will never live in peace.

  2. Being opposed wont help unless we boycott and then what will we do. We have become so dependent on gas that we cant function without it maybe we should walk everywhere.

  3. Same here. I hate it. Why are we using our food supply to fuel our cars? Ignorant...

  4. It sucks!    I can't melt styrofoam down into a good, moldable paste anymore; it's full of air bubbles when it hardens.

  5. 10 % ethanol will not hurt you or your vehicle - a 10% ethanol content in gasoline has been required for years in Nevada.  The downside is less fuel economy because ethanol is less efficient.

I am strongly opposed to using our food supply for fuel - it is stupid.  We could be using switchgrass, or sugar cane like Brazil, but corn is such a cornerstone of our food industry it is a really dumb choice.

Ethanol is suppose to make your mileage go down... how else are the fuel companies to make more $$$

  7. The energy content of ethanol is a lot lower than gasoline, delivering only .7 times the mileage. Moreover, the existing fuel distribution infrastructure cannot be used to store and deliver ethanol. Ethanol has high vapor pressure, and because of its high affinity

for water, it readily takes up water and corrodes the

tanks and pipelines that carry oil. Also, ethanol

can only be blended with gasoline up to about 10

percent before car engines need to be modified.

As a result of these problems, and the fact that

ethanol can’t be used to fuel trucks or jets, many

people are interested in alternatives to ethanol.

One good possibility, however, is ethanol’s bigger cousin, BUTANOL

Ethanol has only two carbons while butanol has

four, which makes it more energy-rich. Butanol’s

low water content (it has less affinity for water

than ethanol) and high energy content are right

up there with gasoline. Butanol can be distributed

and stored in existing pipelines and tanks. It burns

cleanly, without any kind of modification to gasoline

engines, and it can be blended with gasoline

at any ratio. Furthermore, you can make other

fuels—gasoline, diesel, or jet fuel—from butanol

    using well-known chemical processes.

  8. First of all, you need to vote against any issue proposed by the environmentalists.  They are bad for our country.  They come up with really stupid ideas that don't really solve any problems.

Second, you can certainly boycott, but it's an expensive proposition since alternative fuel vehicles have not really hit prime time.

I am in the process of converting some of my cars to CNG (compressed natural gas).  That is an expensive project as well, but I think it will be better in the long run.

  9. I was glad to see MTBE go as it was a heavy pollutant, but I don't necessarily like the use of ethanol.  I see it as just another subsidy for the big farm conglomerates.  The price of a 100lb bag of feed corn has climbed $2-3 (30-40%) over the past 2 years due to diversion of supply to produce ethanol.  That's a direct impact on small farms, not to mention the price of meat or food quality corn products.  This push for ethanol as a replacement for oil is just political sleight of hand.  It could never work on a US scale.

I don't see how you can boycott to any effect.  It's a universal change, and there's no effective alternative to your local gas pump.  A couple of years ago you could have run your own converted e100 vehicle and made your own ethanol, but the price of grainstock has risen so drastically, it's not economically worthwhile at this point.  The best you can do at this time is slow down a bit while driving, and take a driving day off every week.  If a majority did that your looking at hundreds of millions of gallons of gasoline saved every week.

Give your federal representatives a call (or a letter) and get as many people as you can to do the same.  The system is supposed to work, but I don't have a lot of faith in opinions of constituents overriding millions in campaign funding.  Call me a pessimist...

  10. Adding ethanol to fuel is a stupid idea and anyone who knows anything about thermochemistry will know why. The amount of energy you get out of a fuel via combustion is dependent on the strength of the bonds in the fuel molecule. Ethanol simply has no where near as much energy stored in its bonds as petrol. It's as simple as that and there's no way of getting around it. Therefore adding ethanol to petrol will decrease the amount of mileage you get per gallon.
