  1. I hate the fact that they put Belles down on the track. They should be more careful in the sport of horse racing. It's sad that this tragedy happened. She would have won if the "freak" accident wouldn't have happened. She deserved to win. I don't think they gave enough info on why she was euthanized or how she broke her ankles. A VERY sad tragedy.

RIP: Eight Belles- a winner in my heart forever

  2. No, you aren't.

  3. This is the way the industry operates, no matter at what track or race. And what you'll hear very soon is the tragedy of the situation, but "that's racing."

But not confronting the problems within the industry of the over-medication of these grand athletes - which masks soreness issues and other maladies, as a means to get them into the starting gate - nobody knows for sure how healthy a racer actually is, no matter at what level.

  4. no it made me sick too...I don't care about horse racing.  I actually only watch 2min a year, that is the Kentucky derby and I couldn't believe that...I am an animal lover and the way this all went down really made me hate all the people there just cheering and not caring that a horse was killed just minutes after the race.  Pathetic

  5. I just came back from KY Thursday.  They really do take EXCELLENT care of the horses.  However, I felt sick when EIght Belles dies.  That was horible!!!  You have to out the horse down when they break a leg.  They really tried with Barbaro, but he suffered in the long run.  Poor philly.  I am saying a prayer for her.

  6. No I was sick also.  NBC had to know what was unfolding and choose to show all those rich blue bloods celebrating.

  7. It did not bother me. I am more concerned about our troops at war then a race horse.

  8. I know, I was sickened, too.  Complete disregard for another living being.

  9. I saw the headline on Yahoo.  I can't stand to watch horse racing.  Take these horses out there and run them just to make some rich piece of trash more money.  The horses are bred to run.  No matter what, run!  That horse ran herself to death, literally.  Makes me ill!

And what about the horses that don't finish at the top?  So they're not any good for anything now?

Is it animal cruelty?  I can't say yes or no, but the race today sure leans to the yes side in my opinion.  It's sickening.

    Poor Eight Belles.

  10. No, you're not the only one.

  11. I'm sick too.im crying.its horiable. They should have at least had a moment of silence or something. They just went about so happy and didnt even aknowledge poor Eight Belles. As far as Im concerned horse racing is animal cruelty..

  12. For me Eight Belles was the much bigger story....brokenhearted...

Once I knew she was down, I did not give a hoot about the winner, apparently well....I guess I am not alone.

I hope they choke on their mint juleps and giant hats!

  13. They didn't know she was dead while they were celebrating.  It all happened very quickly.  I'm sure everyone is just sick about it now.

  14. No, I am absolutely sick about it.  The only reason I am on here is to express my outrage.

  15. I agree ...it was disgusting!!

The owners daughter chomping on her gum and not one offering condolences was just repulsive...

  16. No.  You're not.  I hesitated even watching, but also placed bets for the first time ever.  I "yay'ed" a little bit because I knew I'd won some money.  Then I saw that Eight Belles was laying on the track and I knew that wasn't good.  Started crying, then felt guilty for even living in Louisville.  The money I win will go towards stopping horse racing.  I do feel bad for the owner and trainer.  They were crying.

Don't give me any BS about this stuff "just happening."  I GUARANTEE if there were a "sport" where your children or your loved ones stood even a chance of sustaining such painful,life-threatening injuries, the sport would no longer exist.

  17. I think it's disgusting, also.  I found particularly heinous the moronic governor of Kentucky who went on to say what a great day it was for the Commonwealth of Kentucky.

The poor filly ran her heart out only to be put down when it seemed to be economically convenient.

  18. Animals do what they are trained to do by their owners. When it comes to pain they go and go until they can't anymore because it's what they are taught and it's what makes their owners happy, ignoring how they feel untill they know or feel they have made the owner proud. Horse racing just like dog fighting should be against the law!! People go to those things to bet....god d**n....you need money that bad get a J O B!! Don't put an animals life on the line for your sick version of entertainment just to make a few bucks!!
