One of my five year old twins came home for school yesterday and asked me "Mommy, what's a skew?" All I could do was roll my eyes and reply "Honey, I think your teacher meant to say SCHOOL."

Am I the only person who finds this disgusting? How can children learn the proper way to speak if they can't even understand their teacher's words?

  1. I agree 100% I try to speak properly and pronounce words correctly because I do have a bit of a stutter this sometimes doesn't happen.  I teach adults technical subjects and the comprehension of English of my students goes all the way from mother tongue to barely understanding English.  In this case it is important that the language be used correctly.

BTW I also author course material and I feel that it is even more important there to use proper English some of my colleagues feel that it is better to write in a more informal bent.

  2. There are any number of words that the teacher might have said.  Accounting for regional accents and dialects, "school" is just one of them.  "Askew" is another.  But, teachers should be careful to enunciate as clearly as possible.
