  1. Hey, if you think it feels different now, wait'll you see the difference if you're unlucky enough to crash and hit your head.  Here's why:  if a helmet really meets DOT, it's got about an inch of hard, energy-absorbing foam between your head and the the shell of the helmet.  Usually it's styrofoam -- the same stuff used to protect computers and electronics during shipping.

If you hit your head against something and you're wearing a helmet that really meets DOT, that foam will let your brain come to a more gradual stop and protect your delicate brain tissues from tearing apart during a stop.   If you wear a regular beanie helmet that has no styrofoam, you get zero protection.   Your brain slows down the same as if you had no helmet at all.  It's like the difference between hitting a wall and hitting a sand pile.  And BTW, the odds are good your beanie helmet won't stay on your head in a crash.  Give it a try:  fasten up your beanie helmet, then grab the rear edge and try to pull it forward over the top of your head.  If you can do that in the store or at home, you can bet that'll happen in a crash.

So what, you may ask?  Well, with a beanie helmet or no helmet your odds of getting killed are about three or four times higher and your odds of surviving with brain damage also go up about three or four times.  And chicks don't usually dig guys with brain damage.  It's like they can tell something's just weird with you.  So the girls you attract -- when you can even attract one -- tend be kind of, well . . . . .
