I am 5 foot 2inches and I really hate to ride tall horses. I want to buy a pony instead. Whould I be to tall to ride a pony over 12 hands? Plus I weigh about 155 pounds. Could I ride a pony about 13 hands?

  1. I have 2 hands

  2. don't do it!!!!!! you are to heavy to ride that pony

  3. no your much to heavy for a pony sorry. tall horses are fun to ride. just get a strong one

  4. just get a quarter horse anyone can ride those regaurdless of size

hight has nothing to do with riding a horse 13 hands is fine i just wouldn't race it

  5. I am 5 foot 7 inches with the wieght of 170.. I ride a mustang haflinger cross at 14.1 hands and his aboulutly fine with it.. between 13.2 and up would be good for you..

  6. trust me im 5'1" and ive had to ride ponies.... its not much fun and i cant do much with ponies.... tall horses are more useful and they give a better ride when your tall

  7. Please Don' t ride a pony you could permenantly damedge them. Just get a small older horse so that you don't hurt them. good luck.

  8. 13 hands would be good. your height isnt a problem.. i think you would be totally fine on a good pony

  9. I am the same height as you and weigh 120 pounds and I have a 13.2 new forest pony so you should be fine with a pony.  It depends on breeds more than size.

  10. i would get at least a 14 hand pony. or lose some weight. JK!

    hope i helped!

  11. It would be OK, but a 14.0hh pony would be alot more comfortable for both of you. =)

  12. totally ponies are very strong but there are a lot of horses that aren't so tall you just have to find the right one 4 like someone else said quarter horses are great 2 but if you are to worried a pony will be just fine

  13. No, you are not too tall to ride a pony. Some folks actually prefer the sensible nature of a pony. You probably would need a larger pony, and one that is stout enough to carry your weight. I belive the rule of thumb is that the rider should be no more than 20% of the horse's weight.

  14. Height has nothing to do with the amount of weight a horse can carry.  As long as it is a stout pony, 13 hh should be fine.  A small Quarter horse would be ideal. You can also get Quarter ponies that are built like QHs, but are under 14.2hh. Also, Dales and Fell ponies would work. Look for something that looks like a mini draft horse.

P.S. Tall horses are more likely to develop lameness issues;)

  15. Yes, I am 2 inches shorter than you and I fit just fine on ponies. It does depend on your legs too. If they are long, you might have to get a slightly bigger pony. Maybe a welsh cob would be best for you. Not teeny, petite ponies (no offense:).

  16. It all depends on the horse, different horses respond differently to weight. It isnt the height as much as the weight that could be a problem. I dont think you should push anything lower then 14 hands.

  17. Have you ever heard of a Spanish Colonial? I raise and preserve them, they are actually on the endangered species list. Most of what I have has been blood typed and is purer then what is bred in Spain today. They are fantastic athletes with the LARGE horse movement in a SMALL horse's body. They are not typically larger then 14.2HH, this is a great alternative to the smaller adult that wants that exotic three-gaited performer. My favorite horse at the moment is a 14.2HH Spanish Colonial, he is currently a 3rd level Dressage horse, does Levade, Spanish Walk, and is coursing 4 feet.  If you want more information feel free to contact me.

  18. Depends on how the horse responds to your weight. I think you would be fine, but watch the horses body language to see if you are bothering it any.

  19. Not if you get one who is stocky and strong.  12 hands is really pretty tiny for you - go for one at least 13 hands, who is fit and not lightly built, with a short back.  You need to be fit, too, in order to ride well.
