Am I to old to figure skate?

I'm currently 14 and will be 15 in December last year I did figure skating for 5 months and got to Freestyle 2.

I had to quit shortly after because both my parents where out of a job.

Now we can afford it again but I'm not sure.

I loved skating but didn't love the fact everyone was so much younger then me.

I wish my parents had started me in a sport when I was younger.

I know I probably wont ever make it to the olympics but I wanna compete but not just locally.

Will that ever happen?

I'm gonna start up by just taking group lessons again.

I wanna find a good coach but dont know where to look I'm not a huge fan of any at my rink (Cary Ice House NC) if someone could find me a couch that would be great but anyways lol.

To late?

Good coach?

  1. Heck, no.Trust me... if you take for a while, until the freestyle levels you will love it.

  2. First off You are NOT to old to skate. I started skating when I was thirteen (I'm fourteen now) and I have been skating for two years. In those two years I have moved up from Beta to FS 5. So if you try, you can achieve.

Now onto the facts. You will most likely not make it to the Olympics. That is, unless you start landing doubles out of nowhere :) Nationals, you may have a better chance. You just have to be determined.

But if you want to do your best skate often, skate hard, and skate your best. I skate usually three days a week, two-three hours each day. Skating with a friend about the same level and age as you will boost your confidence as well.

I know how it feels to with that your parents started you with a sport when you were younger. I wished that too, but I managed to land my axel, so that gave me hope. Every time you land a jump or spin a new spin then that should boost your self esteem a couple of notches.

You will be able to compete locally, and that is great! It's always fun to compete, once you get over the nerves.

Group lessons may be the way to start out, but if you are serious find a coach. Group lessons are not going to help you achieve all those dreams. You should find a nice coach and probably buy your own skates.

I can't help you find a coach because I don't know them. Sorry. But find one that is strict, but still nice. And make sure he or she will help you excel.

And with your natural talent you are sure to move up many levels.

    Good luck!

  3. I took Ice skating lessons for years, and I'm really glad I did.  I'm 30 now, but I still love it when a bunch of people go ice skating and I can show off how talented I am!

It doesn't matter how old you are, it matters that you are having fun.  If you enjoy doing it and you want to get better at it, then keep taking lessons.  If it isn't fun for you anymore, then quit.  If you feel too old, then maybe find a friend who can take classes with you.  You could teach them what you know, then they could get their patches quickly and catch up to you.

  4. Go for it! The oldest person who skates at my rink is 81.

  5. im going to make this simple

no you are not to old to skate

yes you can compete in local competitions AND bigger competitions, but probably not at senior level. even as an adult, you can compete at adult nationals when you are 18+, you dont get money for it, but its fun.

are there any rinks within a half an hour of your house other than cary ice house? you can find a coach there too. i would start with one of the coaches at your closest rink.

maybe the coach you take group lessons with because you are already accustomed to them.

    for your additional details:

only girls over 16 can compete in the olympics in figure skating

figure skaters at senior national level range from 14 (mirai nagasu and caroline zhang) to even 26 or 27 at the latest. there are no age restrictions on how old you can be.

if you were to skate 3 times a week for the next 3 years, you could probably be doing axels and doubles. but depending how much you use that time.

  6. of course not

im going to start taking lessons soon again and ill be 19!

i'm not looking to compete or anything..just to learn some tricks and do something with my time :)

  7. yeah. i have to admit that is an old age to be starting to figure skate again. you have to commit your time to figure skating to be as good as the younger competitors. you can do it if you want to. just do it if you like and don't look around at other people. you're doing this for you.

  8. Go for it.

  9. check lijefe: Adult competition are 21 and over, no?

Hey, freestyle 2 in just 5 months? That's great! Maybe you do have a natural talent for this! I was only in Beta or Gamma after 5 months... was in freestyle 2 after 16 months. -.- You should try! In the next 3 years you might be in your high doubles/low triples?!!!
