I can sing really well, but I can't tune my guitar!

I can't tell when I am tuning it if one string is higher than the other and I get really frustrated. I have been playing for 4 year so It's not like I don't have any experience. But it is weird because I always was told that I was a VERY good singer. Are there types of tone death?

  1. OH gosh no. And I am sure you mean tone deaf. I don't want you to die listening to bad tones, are you listening to Vanilla Ice (hahaha...ok that was a bad joke). But seriously, being tone deaf means you cannot match a pitch vocally. If you sing well, there is NO WAY you are tone deaf. Even people who can't sing well aren't tone deaf. It is extremely RARE to find a person who is literally tone deaf.

For example. Say you play F below middle C. A tone deaf person might sing middle C. That pitch has absolutely no correlation with F. That is an example of someone who's tone deaf. Tuning a guitar incorrectly is not even closely related to being tone deaf. There aren't different types of tone deaf catagories. Its all under one category. You are safe.

Guitar isn't an easy instrument to tune anyway. Ask a guitar player who knows what he/she is doing to show you a better approach to tuning. It might be an easy problem to rectify.

  2. someone who is tone deaf will not be able to tell the difference between two peoples voices when they are not looking directly towards them,

eg two people facing away talk

the tone deaf person will hear the voice but will not be able to determine where the voice came from

  3. It's possible you caused permanent damage to your ears, but I doubt that.. Maybe you should go over tuning again with an instructor or someone you know who is experienced in it. Then keep practicing, it may be as simple as not enough practice.
