Question:

Am I too heavy for my bike?

I bought a mountain bike (not a real expensive one) in February. Just today, I realized that on the tire, it says "Max Load 198 lbs" and I weigh 240 lbs. I have been mostly walking for exercise, but I like to ride my bike once in awhile. Plus I tow a 30 lb child in a bike trailer. The tire squishes down to the ground somewhat, but not all the way.

Am I really too heavy for my bike? Are there other bikes that will hold my weight? I'm just trying to lose weight and have fun while doing it.

  1. i;ve never seen that either

    a tire with max load

    wle.

  2. Interesting.   I don't recall ever seeing a max load number on a tire.   Max pressure yes, load, no.

As long as you have sufficient pressure in the tires, it should be OK.  My son is a lot bigger (6'3", 240) than you and hasn't had any trouble with his mountain bike, although its a more expensive Specialized.   Its possible you may have problems with the frame on a cheap bike, but the tires should be OK.

I'd go with 60psi in the tires BTW.

  3. Even though the max load is for that tire and you have two tires. Most of your weight goes onto the back tire. But the worst that will happen is that the back tire goes flat and maybe gets damaged. So you don't have too much to lose by trying. Keeping the inflation at the maximum recommended PSI will help. If it does break, get a better quality tire and wheel too if necessary.

The best way to remedy your situation is to keep riding! I went from 270 to 190lbs mostly just from riding my bike. Keep it up! :)

  4. The max load is for that tire but you have two, so that makes it 396 lbs total for you and the bike. Keep the tire pressure around 60-65 lbs and you will be ok.
