Question:

Am I underpaid?

I am 18, making 9 dollars an hour at a Par 3 golf course. I have been working there for approximately three years now during "golfing season." What I would like to know is: Am I being underpaid? I work outside. I do almost everything you can imagine to keep the place lookin' good. I weed wack, blow the tee boxes, clean the washrooms, water the greens, mow the lawn, pick up the range balls, go from hole to hole emptying trash, rake, dig, you get the picture. I'm doing this part-time, four days a week. I don't know, I guess I'd say I'm worth at least a little more than $9 an hour... I do work pretty hard...

  1. I used to work at a country club where the grounds crew worked year round (in Cincinnati)....cold mornings!!!.... and they started out around what you are making at a small par 3.....for 3 years, i'd say you need a raise, but compared to others out there, and your age.....you are doing pretty well.

Keep those greens in good shape!!!

  2. the golf industry is notoriously low paying, you do work hard, but your job isn't one that requires a lot of training. if you want a raise, try asking your boss or at least ask for a review, especially if you have been there for four years. More specifically, it depends on what state you work in, in California you make only a $1 more than minimum wage, but I wouldn't say you were underpaid.

  3. I  think you are doing OK.  You probably get free golf privileges and how much is that worth?

  4. Quote from Paul C "If your job description is anything to go by then your overpaid. A frigging monkey could do your job."

I hope you are not a golfer Paul C, because if you were how would you feel if your greenkeeper who works his balls off to keep the golf course in good state just didn't care about his work and left the course in a mess.

You don't get if you don't ask...

  5. You would make minimum wage at the golf course I manage.  You could work here for one hundred years and always do a great job.  You would always make minimum wage.  Obviously you're not underpaid as you continue to do the job for what they are paying.

  6. The truth is that most people in the US are grossly underpaid because the wages do not keep up with inflation.  That said, I don't think that you have a beef here.

You say that you work at a par 3 course, which tells me that it is not one of the top tier courses in the area.  Likely, it is where people come to play if they have a couple of hours of free time, or if they want to work on their short game on a course.  I realize that much of what you do is manual labor, but those jobs typically pay less across the board. Plus, as someone else has already mentioned, you likely also receive the benefit of playing golf for free when you aren't working.  They more than likely feed you as well - so before you start adding up how much you make, be sure to include those figures as well.  Then take a look at what some other part time jobs in the area pay.  You might well be surprised by what you find.

  7. If your job description is anything to go by then your overpaid. A frigging monkey could do your job.

  8. Get a better job???  You will find as you get older that manual labor that anybody with two legs and two arms can do does not pay much.

  9. Ask your boss for a wrtten reference for your CV.  It should get him interested.  Tell him no particular reason you are just putting together a CV for future use.

Sounds to me like you are underpaid if you are doing a good job.  The IF could be the big issue.

  10. definetly i barely do anything and i work at dairy queen and i get paid 8

  11. If you feel like you are under paid then you ARE.  Now all you have to do is convince your employer.
