Am I weird because I like birds and I'm 15 years old? I'm getting a sun conure and my sister thinks I'm nuts.?

My sister is totally the type A, cyborg overachiever. She always is degrading me, and always showing that she is always right. But that doesn't matter. What matters is that I LOVE birds and I'm getting a sun conure in the next month or two. She thinks I'm wasting my money and that NORMAL 15 year old boys should be into girls, and drinking, and saving for a car. I mean those things aren't really important to me at this time. I even asked her "will you ever understand that I like birds, and they're not a waste of money?" And she said "no." She's always degrading me and saying that I am not normal, because I'm into birds and not other normal 15 year old boy stuff. Is it wrong for me to love something passionately and want to buy a bird so I can love it and cherish it. As i am typing away at this I think i am stupid for asking these questions, but i really do need someone else's perspective. I love birds and always will. I think I am normal. I think everyone has their own weird quirks and twists that set them apart from everyone else. Mine just happens to be birds. Tell me what you think.

  1. I have liked birds since I was a little girl, now im 26, and I still like birds! Theres nothing wrong with it at all! Just make sure you provide your sun conure with love and attention, fresh food, toys and all the joys of life! You also should consider adopting a Sun Conure instead of buying it from a pet store!

  2. no ..... its normal to like birds big deal i love dogs and my couse LOVES snakes but it might be a littel wieard to LIKE LIKE birds but besids that nope your pretty normal

  3. igot my first "real" bird (something other than a budgie) when i was 14. he was a red collared lorikeet. my mum didnt approve, she thought it was too much money to spend on a bird. it was $175 about 8 years ago. it was o lot of money for anyone in my family to spend. she wouldnt buy the bird for me, or lend me the money. so i worked out that i would pay a little each wek for the bird and brought him home anyway.he used to come every where with me, i would take him on the train every weekend to my dads house and to work (in a pet store) and even on my shoulder to friends places. anytime i wasnt at school or sleeping he was with me! my friends thought it was a little strange but they got used to it.

funny thing is, about 8 months later, my mum decided to get one of the same birds. (mind you, the bird didnt like her for long, he is my bird too now!) but the point is that she eventually understood.

dont worry about what ur sister says, do what makes you happy. if a bird offers this enjoyment to you then go for it. at your age girls and cars are not the most important things in life, and who knows, when your ready you mite even find a girl with a similar interest. its a great conversation topic. everyone remembers or has a pet that they like to talk about. good luck with your bird, i hope you enjoy it as much as i have enjoyed all of mine. just beware that conures can get bored very easily, and can get noisy. if you need any advice please email me!

  4. No not at all. I like collecting coins and stamps and I don't know of any 15 year old girls who do that. It's uninteresting to be "normal" or to hide how abnormal you are...tell her that, it's true anyway.

  5. i think you're normal. i like that you enjoy something so much and put up with your sister for it. i love dogs. (i can't get any yet though because my dad's allergic) to be honest, i don't like normal guys at all. they're all the same. your sister's wrong. you're cool.

  6. OF COURSE NOT!!! just because you are turning 15 and you are a boy doesnt mean you cant like birds. i am a BIRDLOVER!! my sister is 16 and she likes playing with my birds. my cousin is 18 or 19 and he has pet birds but not parrot like birds he has finches. there is nothing wrong with liking certain things. you are your own person and you should be able to decide what you like and what you do not like. you shouldnt listen to your sister. you dont have to be into girls or be drunk. thats kinda bad actually. you are only a freshman in high school right? if i were you i would just keep my bird and focus on school. plus birds are a lot of fun! dnt let other people decide what you like or do not like for you. if you like having birds then have birds. they are DEFINITELY NOT a waste of money!! if you like birds then its important to you. something that is important to you is something thats a waste of money or time. so yea. i think i made my point.

  7. who cares what she thinks it your life if you have money to buy them hey it your money. you just have a passion for bird. she just jelious that you love something. degrading is what makes her fells better. do what makes you happy

  8. Not weird at all!  You're in good company.  I got my first parrot at 13 and my first Conure at 14, and still have both of them (and 3 others).  They're the best decision I ever made!  Just please I beg you, keep your companion for life.  It IS possible to move cross country, go to college, get housing, get a job, etc, etc with birds, I'm proof!  Never give him up even though the most turbulent years of your life are coming up!  =)  He will be a constant companion and even though he's loud and messy, you'll never regret having him with you until you're both old, no matter how troublesome it may be.

As for your sister, I bet once she meets your new bird she might fall head over heels too.  If not, her loss; the bird world doesn't need pessimistic conformists anyways!
