OK so here is my situation....I am a college graduate and live with my folks. They are paying for my schooling and I am attending a community college to become a firefighter on top of the four year degree....I am 23 years old and got a job as a waiter to pay for myself for going out with friends, and buy other things. I saved up enough money and want to buy a ticket for roundtrip for hawaii for one full month in maui and hostel. This is during my month off between semesters. I already have the cash to pay off all of that!!! Now I have about 4 months to save up some money for the month once I am there and use it as spending money. Thing is, I know my parents will be upset, and whatnot.....They will probably tell me if I do this and spend my money like that then some consequences will result.....The thing is it is my money I worked for and saved up. I have always wanted to live in hawaii for a short time and I think if I do this MONTH vacation it will be enough time in a row that will get it out of my system....I am not using any of their money for this at all. It will all be mine. Only thing stopping is wondering if my parents will get mad or not and PUNISH me.....lol I sound like a ****** little kid right? I know my parents pay for my schooling and whatnot and I appreciate that. But it is my money and I should be able to do what I want with it...It aint drugs or anything illegal.....Any thoughts appreciated.

  1. They are supporting you and paying for your college.  But you also saved and scrimped for this trip so you deserve it.  I think you will have an ultimatum laid out for you though.  You are going to have to weigh this out.  But explain that this is a splurge that you have been dreaming about and plan on seeing it through!  Have fun in Maui!!!!!!

  2. Your a mama's and daddy's boy!!! Grow up!!! I bet your parents were the ones to tell you what college to go to and what degree to get. I find it hard to believe though, that you have a college degree because you have poor grammar and communication skills. Anyways grow a pair and Do whatever you want to do.

  3. There really aren't any hostels on Maui, and even temporary housing is very expensive.  You can't live on the beach either BTW.  Just being realistic.  You only have cash because your parents are paying for everything else--I'd be really upset if I were your parents and you were using money to go to Hawaii for a month.  Maybe they've always to go to Hawaii and maybe b/c they are paying for your education they can't go--have you thought of that?  Sorry, but it sounds fairly immature.

  4. Well, I can understand how your parents would feel. They are paying for your schooling and letting you live in their house, and the money you DO earn you spend on things that aren't necessarily responsible. But I understand your side as well. You aren't making them pay for any of your extra activities or this month long vacation you have been saving for. Although it is your money, you parents are still supporting you so you still have to listen to their opinion unless you want them to stop giving you any money or a place to live. I would sit down with them and try to have a rational conversation about what you want to do and why you want to do it. If they don't understand, I would start saving up more of your money (maybe the money you said you use to go out with friends) and try to move out with a friend and pay for your own college. Then they won't be supporting you, and you'll be able to do whatever you want.

  5. Yes you earned it but THINK about it they are paying your schooling??HELLO It's great that you are working to supplement things you want to do you should be doing that but then it does show selfishness after all they have done for you Think about it?? after you are finished with school you should take them to show your appreciation or all they have done.

  6. If you have enough money saved up for a trip to Hawaii why don't you do yourself a favor and offer some of that money to your parents?

If they are paying for your schooling at age 23 and you have a job but basically are mooching off your parents, it's easy to see how they would be upset if you go off on basically a month long vacation while they are paying for everything else.

    Good luck with your decision!

  7. How many more years (or months) do you plan on sponging off your folks? If you told them that you had obtained a firefighter job starting next month, but wanted to take a month in Hawaii first, they might understand. If you told them that you found an apartment starting next month, and had already been approved, and put down the securtiy deposit, they would probably dance with joy. Try to think of your career and independence first, and your pleasure second.
