Question:

Am I wrong about the 13th floor?

I was alway under the assumption that most places will traditionally and intentionally not place a 13th floor (skip up to 14th) due to superstition.

Well, I was just watching an episode of Mindfreak and Chris angel was doing a "stunt" with skeptics and elevator shafts at the Luxor. Well, at the end of the session they show Floor 13 on the wall. Was that placed there intentionally for the show, was it all staged? can someone explain that to me?

  1. there's always a 13th floor. either the building cuts short at just 12, or the keep building up. but you cant simply skip floor 13. ive known some buildings to use the 13th floor as storage because of the superstition reason. but you cant have a 15 floor building without a 13th floor, not possible. and as for the show the sign is probably staged to add suspense

  2. Most modern buildings don't adhere to this convention; for example, the building I work in has 14 stories, which are numbered 1 through 14 (though the elevator only goes up to 13, and you have to take the stairs to the 14th... quirky fact).

Interestingly, not all cultures consider 13 to be inauspicious.  I've heard of buildings which skip the 19th floor (though I can't seem to find a reference on this right now).

  3. you can't skip a floor even if you say it's the 14th its still the 13th

  4. some  superstions  and  taboos  forbid  mentioning of  number  that  is  inauspicious, but  that  wont  stop  bulidings  from hirise

  5. there is nothing wrong with 13.

  6. Some of buildings will intentionally name the 13th floor the "14th" because of the superstition. However, there is still many building that will call the 13th floor what it is.

  7. The 13th floor still exists, but guests are usually not allowed on it. Most times, it's a maintenance floor (air conditioning, electrical, laundry, etc).

  8. If 13 is so unlucky why then people do not die at the age of 13
