As you work on your family tree you're probably using birth/death certificates and census information to link your ancestors together.  This same information can be used to find a link to a tribe if any link exists.  For example, an ancestor may be listed as American Indian/Native American on a census.  Follow that ancestor to their ancestors.  Eventually the trail will lead you to a certain geographic area where ________ tribe has their ancestral and/or current lands.  Then you'd contact that tribe to find out if that ancestor is listed on the tribe's rolls.    Good luck.
