  1. it depends under what context. it's virtually impossible to get thru traffic now in a timely manner, anf if it drizzles, add 30 minutes.

you could flex a shift for some, say 10 to 6, if their start time was 9 to 5. some people live farther away and have more travel worries.

but if it's the guy who lives 3 miles away, you gotta stop that.

  2. yes, it makes it unfair to those who make an effort to show up on time.  also your its your JOB as a manager to keep track of small things like that, dont try and be the "cool" manager, all that does is make your really hard workers leave

  3. Yes, absolutely, especailly if your managing new/young workers, your setting them up for failure.

That is just One of the many things you should be Managing ! A Good manager Makes good use of employees, resourses, time ect.. "Work" is the real Deal, the real world ! if your supervisor sees you miss-managing your people, YOU may be replaced. ( do you think your employees will like you enought to help pay your bills till you get another job? )

Not only that but, if you let people come in late, where does it stop? next step is extendended break times?

Employee: Hey, Joe came in an hour late and your giving me attitude because I take an extra 5 mins break? BTW how the h**l can you give Joe a good evaluation report when hes late all the time and you only game me a fair rating?

  4. Not if thats how you chose to run your shift then thats fine. I have worked lots of places and many times the boss does not care as long as its a few minutes. But keep in mind (I dont know what kind of business it is ), that the other employees who do show up on time might not like having to do the extra work because mike or mary does not like to come in on time.

  5. perhaps  you  have  learned  to  choose  your  fights  more  carefully  and  you  dont  sweat  the  small stuff.

as  long  as  you  know  what  to  tell them  when  they  ask  why  their  hours  are  less

  6. Not everyone cares about people being on time, I know I had some managers who didn't care if people were late, they weren't bad managers they just knew that things happen and you can't always get to work on time.  When employees are late, they mess up other peoples shifts. Lunch breaks can get backed up because someone decided to be 30 minutes late.

  7. Where does the disrespect and lack of work ethic stop?  What happens if your entire crew showed up late?  Yes, it's a little thing (allowing tardiness), but little things turn into big things and those turn into out of control employees and, ultimately, your termination.  Nip it in the bud now!  They'll respect you more for not being a doormat!  Good luck!

  8. nope. You are probably a good manager because you use common sense. Why be strict and use power unless there are problems?

  9. Absolutely. If you're that sloppy about expecting people to arrive on time, you're probably just as sloppy in a lot of other areas.

  10. I wouldn't say that u are a bad manager, u do tend to look the other way, but if the higher up sees what u are doing, do u then rethink the situation as you are letting them arrive whenever they want and then feel that u didn't do Ur job as a manager should had done?... u are right... some companies penalizes their employees by deducting pay from their check or warning notices... but the question that u viewed before was i think he was stating that he was being hung by his manager in front of others... i think that is wrong...

but just as employees who arrive on time, u also have to think that some of them steal from their corporations, but since they are on time, it goes unnoticed.... but for the latecomers, there is always h**l to pay... and usually they are the ones who stay late and work overtime....

  11. Bad? Not necessarily. But you're letting them know that that kind of behavior is acceptable. Unfortunately, without cracking down on it this will let them think they can do it anytime, anywhere with any job. If I were you, I'd exert a little more control over tardiness. You are all supposed to be productive and doing your jobs as responsible adults. If you're going to allow them to be late all the time, you don't seem like a responsible manager.

  12. No, not bad, just ineffective.

Employees win unemployment claims because of managers like you.  If you're not following the policy, the policy is worth nothing.

I've fired managers who performed like you.
