i wear contacts mostly and glasses at night and every once in a while. i really want to do this surgery because contacts and glasses are so annoying!! the surgery is expensive but over the yrs, the cost of glasses, contacts, etc are even more expensive... so i know i want to do this, but am i a candidate??

my left eye's prescription is 11.5 and my right is 12 and has astigmatism and is slightly lazy... i will be seventeen in a couple weeks, and my mom is willing to sign any papers needed, will they do it for me at this age?

  1. i think you are, but not completely sure.

but, it is better to wait until you are older, and you won't have your prescription change as often. when you are older the prescription won't change anymore. i don't think it's worth it as much, when you'll need updates.

  2. No.  LASIK is not done for prescriptions over about -9.00.  There are other surgical options for higher powers.

Mostly you should wait until you are 21+ as your prescription must be unchanged for at least 2 years before having surgery.  There are a number of individual factors that determine whether you are a candidate for any surgical procedure and only a refractive surgeon who has personally examined your eyes can tell you if you are a candidate.

Ask your eye doctor to refer you to a surgeon who does some of the more advanced procedures for an opinion.
